It specifies manufacturing tolerances for extension and compensating cables (other than mineral insulated cables) provided directly to users of industrial processes. These tolerances are determined with respect to the e.m.f.-temperature relationship of Part 1 of the standard. Furthermore, requirements for extension and compensating cables for use in industrial process control are specified. The main technical changes with regard to the previous edition are as follows: Addition of Subclause 5.4 Connectors. Addition of Clauses 7 Dimensions and 8 Requirements.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 60584-3:2007, published by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), is a globally recognized standard that specifies manufacturing tolerances and identification systems for extension and compensating cables used with thermocouples in industrial process measurement. This part of the IEC 60584 series provides detailed guidance for cables other than mineral-insulated varieties, ensuring accurate temperature measurement and process control. The standard also covers identification and marking protocols, colour coding, and essential cable requirements to maintain measurement reliability in demanding industrial environments.
Key Topics
- Manufacturing Tolerances: Specifies allowable deviations for extension and compensating cables, directly relating to the electromotive force (e.m.f.) versus temperature characteristics defined in IEC 60584-1.
- Cable Types:
- Extension cables (e.g., KX, JX) use conductors matching the composition of the associated thermocouple.
- Compensating cables (e.g., KC, JC) use different but compatible materials, with identification by type and class.
- Identification System: Outlines standardized marking, including letter codes and tolerance classes, enabling clear, traceable product identification.
- Colour Coding: Specifies insulation and sheath colours for both conductors and connectors to facilitate error-free installation and maintenance.
- Physical and Electrical Requirements:
- Minimum insulation resistance values
- Dielectric strength tests
- Resistance and construction details for conductors
- Marking and traceability documentation
- Key Updates in the 2007 Edition:
- A new subclause on connectors to align cable accessories with identification and colour codes
- Added requirements on conductor dimensions and overall cable performance
Applications
IEC 60584-3:2007 is essential for any industrial sector utilizing thermocouples for process measurement and control. Its applications include:
- Industrial Automation: Maintains signal integrity between thermocouple sensors and control systems, vital for automation and safety.
- Process Industries: Used in chemical, petrochemical, and power plants where precise temperature monitoring is critical.
- Quality Assurance: Ensures accuracy in temperature data logging and process validation activities.
- Equipment Manufacturing: Assists cable and instrument manufacturers in producing cables that meet international tolerances and identification protocols.
- Maintenance and Retrofit: Provides clear guidelines for replacement and identification of cables during system upgrades or repairs.
By following this standard, users reduce risk of measurement errors caused by mismatched cables, improve system reliability, and ensure compliance with international best practices.
