IEC 60584-1:2013 specifies reference functions and tolerances for letter-designated thermocouples (Types R, S, B, J, T, E, K, N, C and A). Temperatures are expressed in degrees Celsius based on the International Temperature Scale of 1990, ITS-90 (symbol t90), and the EMF (symbol E) is in microvolts. The reference functions are polynomials which express the EMF, E in V, as a function of temperature t90 in °C with the thermocouple reference junctions at 0 °C. Values of EMF at intervals of 1 °C are tabulated in Annex A. This third edition cancels and replaces the second edition published in 1995 and constitutes a technical revision. It includes the following changes: - IEC 60584-1:1995 and IEC 60584-2:1982 have been merged; - the standard is now explicitly based on the reference polynomials which express thermocouple EMF as functions of temperature. The tables derived from the polynomials are given in Annex A; - inverse polynomials expressing temperature as functions of EMF are given in Annex B, but inverse tables are not given; - the range of the polynomial relating the EMF of Type K thermocouples is restricted to 1 300 °C; - values of the Seebeck coefficients are given at intervals of 10 °C; - thermoelectric data (EMF and Seebeck coefficients) are given at the fixed points of the ITS-90; - some guidance is given in Annex C regarding the upper temperature limits and environmental conditions of use for each thermocouple type.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 60584-1:2013 is an authoritative international standard published by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), focusing on thermocouples. This standard-Part 1 of the IEC 60584 series-specifies electromotive force (EMF) reference functions and tolerances for various letter-designated thermocouple types including R, S, B, J, T, E, K, N, C, and A. It defines the EMF-temperature relationships based on the International Temperature Scale of 1990 (ITS-90) and provides polynomial equations and tables for precise temperature measurement. This third edition consolidates previous parts of IEC 60584 and introduces updated specifications reflecting advances in thermoelectric measurement technologies.
Key Topics
Thermocouple Reference Functions and Tolerances
- The core of IEC 60584-1:2013 is the specification of polynomial functions that correlate EMF output (in microvolts) of thermocouples with temperature expressed in degrees Celsius (°C) conforming to ITS-90.
- This edition merges two earlier standards, providing a unified base for thermocouple EMF specifications and tolerances.
- It defines standard tolerances for thermocouple manufacturing ensuring consistency and reliability across devices, applicable typically to thermocouple wires ranging from 0.13 mm to 3.2 mm in diameter.
Thermocouple Types Covered
- Types R, S, B, J, T, E, K, N represent standard metallic thermocouples.
- Tungsten-rhenium based thermocouples Types C and A are included, providing specifications aligned with ASTM and GOST standards.
- The standard sets temperature limits and environmental guidance per thermocouple type, ensuring optimized and safe operational use.
Seebeck Coefficient and EMF Tables
- The Seebeck coefficient, the rate of change of EMF with temperature, is specified at intervals of 10 °C for all thermocouple types.
- Comprehensive EMF tables with values at 1 °C intervals are provided in Annex A to aid in precise temperature calculation.
- Annex B includes inverse polynomial functions to calculate temperature from EMF values, facilitating industrial and laboratory measurements.
Environmental and Operational Guidance
- Annex C offers practical guidance on selecting thermocouples based on temperature range and environmental conditions such as atmospheric composition and radiation exposure.
- This helps users choose the correct thermocouple type for specific industrial or scientific applications to maintain measurement accuracy and thermocouple longevity.
Applications
IEC 60584-1:2013 is essential for industries and applications requiring precise temperature measurement using thermocouples, including:
- Industrial process control: Accurate temperature monitoring in manufacturing lines such as metallurgy, chemical processing, and power generation.
- Scientific research: Calibration labs and experimental setups relying on ITS-90 temperature scale conformity.
- Aerospace and automotive engineering: High-temperature monitoring for engine and component testing.
- Energy production: Thermal management in nuclear, fossil fuel, and renewable energy plants.
- Material testing: Heat treatment and thermal property analysis with traceable temperature measurement standards.
By adhering to IEC 60584-1:2013, manufacturers, calibration facilities, and end-users ensure high accuracy, repeatability, and interoperability of thermocouple-based temperature measurement systems worldwide.
Related Standards
IEC 60584-1:2013 is part of a broader thermocouple standardization framework including:
- IEC 60584-2 (now merged with Part 1) - Previously covered thermocouple tolerances and reference tables.
- IEC 60584-3:2007 - Covers extension limits and special thermocouple types.
- ASTM E230/E230M-12 - US standard, relevant for tungsten-rhenium thermocouples Types C and A.
- GOST R 8.585-2001 - Russian national standard referenced for tungsten-rhenium thermocouples.
- International Temperature Scale ITS-90 - The foundation temperature scale used for defining thermocouple EMF relationships.
These standards collectively ensure harmonization in thermocouple manufacturing, calibration, and application worldwide, enhancing reliability in thermal measurement technologies.
