IEC 60598-2-11:2013 specifies requirements for household aquarium luminaires incorporating electric light sources on supply voltages not exceeding 1 000 V. This second edition cancels and replaces the first edition published in 2005. This edition constitutes a technical revision. This edition includes the following significant technical changes with respect to the previous edition: a) Subclause 11.1, change of the scope to open the standard for all kinds of electrical light sources. b) Subclause 11.4.2, change of the definition in order to clarify non-permanently attached aquarium luminaire. c) Subclause 11.11.3, for indoor operated aquarium luminaire, change of the size of external cable to at least 0,75 mm2 instead of 1,0 mm2 in the former edition. This publication is to be read in conjunction with IEC 60598-1:2008.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 60598-2-11:2013 is an international standard issued by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) that specifies particular requirements for aquarium luminaires. These are electric lighting devices designed for use with aquariums operating on supply voltages not exceeding 1,000 V. This edition supersedes the previous 2005 version and incorporates significant technical revisions to enhance safety, performance, and applicability of aquarium lighting.
The standard covers household aquarium luminaires that may be permanently or non-permanently attached to the aquarium or suspended independently. It ensures protection against electric shock, moisture ingress, and accidental water immersion while promoting durability and proper electrical functioning in proximity to aquatic environments.
Key Topics
-
Scope Expansion: The updated standard opens applicability to all kinds of electrical light sources used in aquarium luminaires, not limited to specific lamp types.
-
Definitions and Classifications: Clear distinctions are made between:
- Non-permanently attached luminaires – removable by hand for maintenance.
- Permanently attached luminaires – fixed by tools.
- Independently suspended (pendant) luminaires.
-
Electrical Safety Requirements:
- Minimum external cable size for indoor luminaires reduced to 0.75 mm² for flexibility without compromising safety.
- Requirements for protective measures against UV radiation especially when metal halide lamps are in use.
- Creepage distances, clearances, and robust grounding provisions to prevent electric shock.
-
Mechanical and Construction Specifications:
- Minimum distance marking of 15 mm from the luminaire to the maximum water level to avoid water contact.
- Resistance to moisture, dust, and thermal endurance tests to validate durability.
-
Markings and Labeling:
- Mandatory clear and standardized markings on luminaires, including symbols indicating safe distances from water.
- Instructions for disconnecting supply and other safety labels consistent with IEC 60598-1 general requirements.
-
Testing Procedures:
- Compliance testing aligns with IEC 60598-1, incorporating general and particular test procedures tailored for aquarium luminaires.
Applications
IEC 60598-2-11:2013 is relevant for manufacturers, designers, and safety regulators involved with:
- Aquarium lighting systems designed for private residences, public aquariums, and aquatic research facilities.
- Ensuring safe lighting installation on or near aquariums to prevent electrical hazards during maintenance or accidental exposure to water.
- Product development for versatile luminaires that support various electric light sources, improving energy efficiency and illumination quality for aquatic life and decorative purposes.
- Quality assurance and certification processes to meet international safety benchmarks, facilitating global market access and user confidence.
This standard plays a critical role in mitigating risks associated with electric appliances in moist and wet environments typical of aquarium setups.
Related Standards
- IEC 60598-1:2008 – General requirements and tests for luminaires, which forms the foundational standard to be used alongside IEC 60598-2-11.
- Other parts of the IEC 60598 series addressing specific luminaire types and usage contexts, providing a comprehensive framework for lighting safety and functionality.
- National and regional standards harmonizing electrical safety for aquariums, sometimes with voltage limits (e.g., the US limit of 300 V supply for aquarium equipment).
