IEC 60598-2-20:2014 specifies requirements for lighting chains fitted with series, parallel or a combination of series/parallel connected light sources for use either indoors or outdoors on supply voltages not exceeding 250 V. For combinations where rope lights (also known as sealed lighting chains) are included, see IEC 60598-2-21. This fourth edition cancels and replaces the third edition (2010). This edition includes the following significant technical changes with respect to the previous edition, where the requirements for rope lights (sealed lighting chains) have been removed and are now dealt with in IEC 60598-2-21. The contents of the corrigendum of December 2016 have been included in this copy. This publication is to be read in conjunction with IEC 60598-1:2014
Abstract
Overview
IEC 60598-2-20:2014 is an international standard published by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) that specifies particular requirements for lighting chains. It covers lighting chains composed of series, parallel, or combined series/parallel connected light sources, intended for indoor or outdoor use on supply voltages not exceeding 250 V. This edition supersedes the previous 2010 version and excludes requirements for rope lights (sealed lighting chains), which are now addressed separately under IEC 60598-2-21.
The standard complements IEC 60598-1:2014, which sets general requirements for luminaires. IEC 60598-2-20 is essential for manufacturers, testers, and certifiers to ensure the safety, reliability, and compliance of lighting chains, including decorative and ornamental types such as Christmas tree lights.
Key Topics
-
Scope and Application
Defines lighting chains with different electrical configurations (series, parallel, series/parallel) for use up to 250 V, applicable to both indoor and outdoor environments. -
Safety and Protection
Includes requirements for protection against electric shock, dust ingress, moisture, and mechanical stresses, ensuring lighting chains operate safely under various conditions. -
Construction Requirements
Details design rules for lampholders, terminal blocks, connectors, gaskets, and wiring to maintain structural integrity and electrical safety. -
Marking and Labeling
Specifies clear and durable marking requirements on lighting chains and their packaging to convey safety information, electrical ratings, and manufacturer identity. -
Testing Protocols
Covers endurance, thermal, insulation, electric strength, short-circuit, and environmental resistance tests to validate compliance. -
Creepage Distances and Clearances
Ensures minimum safe distances between conductive parts to prevent electrical arcing and enhance insulation effectiveness. -
Electrical Components
Addresses requirements related to plugs, cable lengths, terminals, and extendable chain configurations under Class II isolation. -
Interconnecting Connectors
Normative annex provides specifications for connectors used when assembling lighting chains, focusing on secure electrical and mechanical connections.
Applications
IEC 60598-2-20 governs a broad range of lighting chains used for decorative and functional illumination. Typical applications include:
-
Christmas Tree Lights
Lighting chains with series or combined series/parallel lamps designed for safe household use. -
Ornamental Lighting
Chains fitted with decorative elements used indoors or outdoors, such as garden or patio lighting. -
Public and Commercial Decorations
Lighting solutions for events, promenades, ski track illumination, and other temporary or permanent setups requiring safe and reliable lighting chains. -
Outdoor Festive Installations
Weather-resistant lighting chains designed according to IEC requirements to withstand environmental conditions.
By adhering to IEC 60598-2-20, manufacturers ensure enhanced user safety, product durability, and compliance with international electrical safety norms, helping prevent hazards related to electrical faults or environmental exposure.
