IEC 60598-2-21:2014 specifies requirements for rope lights (sealed lighting chains) fitted with non-replaceable series- or parallel- or a combination of series/parallel-connected light sources for use either indoors or outdoors on supply voltages not exceeding 250 V. The contents of the corrigendum of December 2016 have been included in this copy. This publication is to be read in conjunction with IEC 60598-1:2014.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 60598-2-21:2014 is an international standard published by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC). It addresses the particular requirements for rope lights, which are also known as sealed lighting chains. Rope lights consist of non-replaceable, series-connected, parallel-connected, or combined-series/parallel light sources, designed for both indoor and outdoor use, and are intended for supply voltages up to 250 V.
The standard ensures that rope lights are manufactured, tested, and marked in compliance with global safety and performance expectations, supporting manufacturers, certification organizations, and regulators in evaluating product conformity. This edition includes the corrigendum published in December 2016 and must be used alongside IEC 60598-1:2014, which covers the general requirements for luminaires.
Key Topics
-
Scope and Definitions:
- Applies to rope lights (sealed lighting chains) for indoor and outdoor use at voltages not exceeding 250 V.
- Covers requirements for rope lights used as decorative illuminations, including those integrated into ornamental displays or fixed to frames.
- Provides precise terminology for rope lights and associated components.
-
Testing and Safety Requirements:
- Procedures for performance and mechanical strength tests, including pull, torque, bending, and impact tests at various temperatures.
- Protection against electric shock (Class II or Class III classification).
- Requirements for dust, solid objects, and moisture protection, with specific IP ratings for outdoor products (minimum IP44).
-
Marking and Identification:
- Mandatory marking of rated voltage and wattage directly on products.
- Special warnings and handling instructions, such as:
- “FOR INDOOR USE ONLY” where applicable.
- Instructions against connecting to the supply while rope lights are packed or coiled.
- The need to avoid use when covered or recessed.
- Prohibition against connecting different manufacturers’ rope light systems.
-
Materials and Construction:
- Specifications for cables, connectors, and supply cords in rope light assemblies.
- Minimum mechanical and electrical properties for cables and terminals.
- Details on proper enclosure and non-flammability of control units.
Applications
IEC 60598-2-21:2014 is relevant to a broad spectrum of users:
- Manufacturers: Ensure design and production of rope lights meet global safety standards before market release.
- Testing Laboratories and Certification Bodies: Base for conformity assessments, type testing, and product certification.
- Importers and Distributors: Confirm imported or distributed rope lights comply with international and local regulations.
- Regulators and Inspectors: Use as a reference for compliance verification and enforcement actions.
- Installers and Designers: Select certified, compliant rope lights for construction, events, holiday decorations, and architectural lighting.
- Consumers: Assurance of product safety and reliable performance in both residential and commercial environments.
Related Standards
For comprehensive compliance, IEC 60598-2-21:2014 is used in conjunction with several key standards:
- IEC 60598-1: Luminaires – General requirements and tests.
- IEC 60529: Degrees of protection provided by enclosures (IP Code).
- IEC 60227-5: Polyvinyl chloride insulated flexible cables.
- IEC 60245-4: Rubber insulated flexible cables.
- IEC 61984: Connectors – Safety requirements and tests.
- IEC 61347-2-11/13: Lamp controlgear particular requirements.
- ISO 4046-4: Paper and board grades and converted products vocabulary.
Comprehensive understanding and application of IEC 60598-2-21:2014 ensures rope lights are safe, reliable, and fit for decorative or functional lighting installations worldwide. For the most up-to-date requirements, always refer to the latest standards and included corrigenda.
