IEC 60245-4:2011 details the particular specifications for rubber insulated and braided cords and for rubber insulated and rubber or polychloroprene or other equivalent synthetic elastomer sheathed cords and flexible cables of rated voltages up to and including 450/750 V. All cables should comply with the appropriate requirements given in IEC 60245-1 and the individual types of cables should each comply with the particular requirements of this part. The main changes with respect to the previous edition are as follows: - updating of the normative references; - updating of Table 3 and Table 5 on dimensions for type 53 and type 57. This publication is to be read in conjunction with IEC 60245-1:2003 and IEC 60245-2:1994.
Abstract
Overview
The IEC 60245-4:2011 standard specifies requirements for rubber insulated cords and flexible cables rated up to and including 450/750 V. This is a critical international standard published by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) that focuses on rubber and elastomer sheathed cords used in various electrical applications. Part 4 of the IEC 60245 series addresses the particular construction, dimensions, and testing criteria for these cables to ensure safety, reliability, and performance in low voltage environments.
This edition updates normative references and revises dimensional requirements, reinforcing compliance with IEC 60245-1 and 60245-2 standards. The standard is essential for manufacturers, designers, and users of flexible rubber insulated cables in electrical installations, household appliances, and industrial equipment.
Key Topics
- Scope: Covers braided cords, rubber insulated cords with either rubber or polychloroprene sheaths, and other equivalent synthetic elastomer sheathed cords rated up to 450/750 V.
- Construction Requirements:
- Conductor specifications according to IEC 60228.
- Insulation, separator, and sheath materials detailed for durability and electrical safety.
- Dimensional tables provided for various cable types, ensuring uniformity and interchangeability.
- Testing Procedures: Includes electrical, mechanical, and environmental tests to verify cable performance under operational conditions.
- Cable Types Covered:
- Type 53: Braided cords
- Type 57: Ordinary tough rubber sheathed cords
- Type 66: Heavy polychloroprene or equivalent sheathed flexible cables
- Cables for decorative chains and other specialized applications
- Normative References: Cross-references other IEC standards like IEC 60245-1 (general requirements) and IEC 60245-2, enhancing the comprehensive understanding and application of rubber insulated cables.
Applications
IEC 60245-4:2011 standard cables are widely applied in:
- Household Appliances: Power cords for domestic devices requiring flexibility and safety under normal voltage conditions.
- Industrial Flexible Cables: For machinery and equipment where cables need to withstand mechanical stress while maintaining electrical insulation.
- Electrical Installations: Flexible cords connecting electrical devices in commercial and residential settings up to 450/750 V.
- Decorative and Specialty Lighting: Flexible rubber insulated cables suitable for decorative chains and similar applications that demand reliable safety standards.
- Replacement and Maintenance: Guiding the specifications for cable replacement ensuring compatibility and compliance with international safety norms.
Related Standards
- IEC 60245-1:2003: General requirements for rubber insulated cables rated up to and including 450/750 V. IEC 60245-4 must be read in conjunction with this document.
- IEC 60245-2:1994: Covers PVC insulated cables, offering complementary information on insulation materials.
- IEC 60228: Standard for conductors of insulated cables, foundational for conductor construction in rubber insulated cables.
- IEC 60811 Series: Specifies test methods for the non-metallic materials used in cables, relevant for insulation and sheath performance verification.
- ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2: Ensures the coherent development of IEC standards.
IEC 60245-4:2011 remains a key reference for ensuring the safety, performance, and standardization of rubber insulated cords and flexible cables rated up to 450/750 volts. Its comprehensive specifications help manufacturers design compliant products while providing users and installers with confidence in safe and durable cable solutions.
