IEC 60721-2-1:2013 presents classifications of open-air climates in terms of temperature and humidity. It is intended to be used as part of the background material when selecting appropriate temperature and humidity severities for product testing and application. This second edition cancels and replaces the first edition, published in 1982, and constitutes a technical revision. The main changes with respect to the previous edition are in the definitions of climate types.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 60721-2-1:2013 is an international standard developed by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC). It focuses on the classification of environmental conditions, particularly the open-air climates encountered worldwide, by describing them in terms of temperature and humidity. The standard serves as a reference when selecting the proper severities for environmental testing and product application. By providing standardized climate classifications, IEC 60721-2-1:2013 supports industries in designing and validating products intended for global deployment under various climatic conditions.
Key Topics
-
Open-Air Climate Classifications: The standard defines a limited number of climate classes based on temperature and humidity data observed in nature across the globe (excluding central Antarctica and high altitudes above 5,000 m).
-
Climate Types: The main climate categories include:
- Tropical
- Arid
- Temperate
- Cold
- Polar
-
Environmental Parameters:
- Temperature: Both extreme and mean values are considered, relevant both for short-term (hours) and long-term (days or years) product exposure and operational reliability.
- Humidity: Values consider both relative humidity and absolute air humidity, which can significantly impact product performance and longevity.
-
Statistical Approach: Classifications are based on globally gathered and validated meteorological data, taking into account extreme values, mean daily extremes, and the most severe (absolute) environmental conditions observed over many years.
-
Product Lifecycle Relevance: Climate classes are designed to reflect the conditions most often met by products during transport, storage, installation, and use.
Applications
IEC 60721-2-1:2013 is crucial across sectors that manufacture or deploy products for use in varied climates. Its main applications include:
- Product Testing: Determining the correct environmental severities for reliability and performance testing during product development.
- Product Design: Informing engineering decisions to ensure products can withstand specified climatic stresses throughout their lifecycle.
- Site Selection and Project Planning: Assisting in the selection of installation sites, taking into account the designated climate class of the region.
- Compliance and Certification: Providing a framework for meeting international compliance requirements regarding environmental conditions, supporting global product acceptance.
- Supply Chain Management: Guiding logistics and storage solutions to ensure product longevity across diverse global routes and destinations.
Industries that benefit from this standard include electronics, telecommunications, transportation, energy, aerospace, and construction.
