IEC 60721-3-9:2024 classifies groups of microclimatic conditions, to which components (basic parts, assemblies, built-in units) can be subjected inside products, which are used under the climatic conditions as classified in IEC 60721-3-3 and IEC 60721-3-4. This second edition cancels and replaces the first edition published in 1993, Amendment 1:1994 and Corrigendum 1:1995. This edition constitutes a technical revision. This edition includes the following significant technical changes with respect to the previous edition: a) Clause 2 has been updated; b) Clause 4 has been re-edited and simplified; c) Annex A has been revised and updated; d) a new Annex B has been added and gives the origin of the constitutional diagram for humid air, which is the basis of drawing the climatogram for a microclimate.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 60721-3-9:2024 is an international standard developed by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) that focuses on the classification of microclimatic environmental conditions inside products. This part of the IEC 60721 series categorizes groups of environmental parameters along with their severities, specifically addressing microclimates affecting electrical and electronic components within enclosures or assemblies. It applies to components such as basic parts, assemblies, and built-in units used under climatic conditions defined in IEC 60721-3-3 and IEC 60721-3-4.
This second edition supersedes the original 1993 version and its amendments, offering a technical revision with updated clauses, revised annexes, and new informative content including the origin of the constitutional diagram for humid air-a critical tool for drawing climatograms relevant to microclimates inside products.
Key Topics
-
Microclimatic Classification
The standard defines microclimates as specific climatic conditions at the site of a component within a product, primarily considering air temperature and relative humidity. It introduces a classification system encapsulating:- Climatic class from external weather-related standards (IEC 60721-3-3 and IEC 60721-3-4)
- Classes of high air temperature inside the product
- Optional classes for limited relative air humidity accounting for internal conditions
-
Severity Levels
Severity parameters cater to the operational stresses components endure due to localized temperature increases or humidity decreases inside enclosures, which can significantly differ from ambient external conditions. For example, temperatures internally may exceed environmental temperatures leading to reduced relative humidity and corrosion risks. -
Graphical Tools and Diagrams
The standard includes updated annexes with graphical representations such as climatograms and the constitutional diagram for humid air. These tools help engineers visualize and analyze microclimate conditions and their impact on component reliability. -
Simplified and Up-to-Date Content
Clause reorganizations and simplifications ease the application of this standard, making it accessible without compromising technical rigor.
Applications
IEC 60721-3-9:2024 is invaluable for industries and sectors where precise environmental condition definitions inside products are crucial for product design, testing, and reliability assessment including:
-
Electronics Manufacturing
Helps manufacturers specify environmental requirements for internal components of devices ranging from household appliances to industrial electronics. -
Electrical Enclosure Design
Guides engineers in designing enclosures that maintain suitable microclimates to protect sensitive parts from overheating or corrosion. -
Quality Assurance and Testing
Enables environmental testing to simulate realistic internal product conditions for durability and compliance verification. -
Product Development
Assists in evaluating the environmental stressors on embedded units, ensuring operational stability under various climatic scenarios.
Related Standards
To fully implement IEC 60721-3-9:2024, familiarity with the following IEC standards is recommended:
- IEC 60721-3-3:2019 – Classification of environmental parameters for stationary use at weather-protected locations
- IEC 60721-3-4:2019 – Classification of environmental parameters for stationary use at non-weather-protected locations
- IEC 60721-1 – Definitions of environmental parameters and severity ratings
- IEC 60721-3-0:2020 – Introduction to classifications of environmental parameters and severities
These interrelated standards ensure comprehensive handling of environmental classifications from outer climatic influences to the nuanced microclimatic conditions inside products.
