IEC 60730-2-22:2014 applies to the partial evaluation of thermal motor protectors as defined in IEC 60730-1 for household and similar use, including heating, air conditioning and similar applications as well as for sealed (hermetic and semi-hermetic type) motor-compressors. A thermal motor protector is considered an integrated control since its protective functionality is dependent on the correct mounting and fixing in or on a motor and which can only be fully tested in combination with the relevant motor. This dependency is illustrated by: - the ability of the thermal motor protector to accurately and reliably sense the heat of the motor windings; - thus, addressing the over-temperature protection due to motor overload conditions; - the ability of the thermal motor protector to accurately and reliably sense the current due to motor locked-rotor conditions; - thus, reducing the response time and not being adversely affected by heat-sink at the assembly spot in the application and the influence of the motor's electromagnetic field on the switch behaviour of the thermal motor protector; - particularly, affecting the arc direction between the contacts resulting in uneven wear of the contact material and eventually leading to failure of operation. Requirements concerning the testing of the combination of sealed (hermetic and semi-hermetic type) motor-compressors and thermal motor protectors are given in IEC 60335-2-34. This standard applies to thermal motor protectors using NTC or PTC thermistors, additional requirements for which are contained in Annex J. Key words: Thermal, Motor protectors, Integrated control This publication is to be read in conjunction with IEC 60730-1:2010.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 60730-2-22:2014 is an international standard published by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) that specifies the particular requirements for thermal motor protectors, a critical component in automatic electrical controls. Thermal motor protectors are designed to safeguard motors by detecting overheating and current overloads, thus ensuring safe and reliable operation.
This standard forms part of the broader IEC 60730 series focused on automatic electrical controls for household and similar use. IEC 60730-2-22:2014 supplements IEC 60730-1 by addressing the specific evaluation, testing, and performance criteria for thermal motor protectors utilized in household appliances and similar applications such as heating, air conditioning, and sealed motor-compressors (hermetic and semi-hermetic types).
Key Topics
-
Scope of Application
The standard applies to thermal motor protectors integrated into motors, emphasizing their role as part of a complete motor control system. It covers:- Household and similar use motors
- Heating and air conditioning equipment
- Sealed (hermetic and semi-hermetic) motor-compressors
-
Protection Functionality
The thermal motor protector’s protective function depends on accurate heat sensing of motor windings and reliable detection of locked-rotor current conditions. This ensures:- Over-temperature protection from motor overload
- Fast response to locked rotor conditions
- Minimization of wear and failure risks related to electromagnetic fields and contact arcing
-
Testing Requirements
Partial evaluation focuses on:- Correct integration and mounting with the motor
- Endurance and mechanical strength under various stresses
- Resistance to moisture, dust, heat, fire, corrosion, and electromagnetic interference (EMC)
- Validation of electrical insulation, clearances, and short-circuit capability
-
Thermistor Technology
Thermal motor protectors utilizing NTC (Negative Temperature Coefficient) or PTC (Positive Temperature Coefficient) thermistors are included, with additional requirements outlined in Annex J of the standard. -
Integration and Combination Testing
The standard recognizes the necessity of testing the thermal motor protector in combination with the motor, as well as compliance with other related standards such as IEC 60335-2-34 for sealed motor-compressors.
Applications
IEC 60730-2-22:2014 is essential for manufacturers, designers, and testing organizations involved in the development, production, and certification of motors and motor-protector assemblies for:
-
Household Appliances
Motors in washing machines, refrigerators, HVAC systems, and other consumer devices requiring thermal protection and fail-safe operation. -
Heating and Cooling Systems
Motor-protectors safeguarding compressors and fans to prevent damage due to overheating or electrical overload. -
Industrial Equipment
Small-scale motor drives where integrated thermal protection ensures operational safety and extends motor life. -
Sealed Motor-Compressors
Hermetic and semi-hermetic compressors in refrigeration and air conditioning systems requiring specific reliability and safety measures as stipulated by this standard.
By complying with IEC 60730-2-22:2014, manufacturers can guarantee that thermal motor protectors will function safely within their intended motor applications, reduce downtime, and enhance overall device reliability.
