This part of IEC 60730 applies to the evaluation of thermal protectors for ballasts for tubular fluorescent lamps. This standard applies to thermal protectors using NTC or PTC thermistors, additional requirements for which are contained in Annex J. Requirements concerning the testing of the combination of ballasts and thermal protectors are given in IEC 61347-1.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 60730-2-3:2006 is an international standard developed by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) which addresses the particular requirements for thermal protectors for ballasts used with tubular fluorescent lamps. As part of the broader IEC 60730 series on automatic electrical controls for household and similar use, Section 2-3 sets out the evaluation and safety requirements specifically for self-resetting thermal protectors - devices integrated into or used with ballasts to prevent overheating. The standard also details how these protectors should be tested, and provides guidance for protectors utilizing NTC (Negative Temperature Coefficient) or PTC (Positive Temperature Coefficient) thermistors, referring to additional requirements in Annex J. Testing of combined ballast-protector assemblies is covered by the related standard IEC 61347-1.
Key Topics
-
Scope and Application
- Applies to self-resetting thermal protectors for ballasts used with tubular fluorescent lamps.
- Covers both NTC and PTC thermistor-based thermal protectors.
- Focuses on devices operating on AC supplies up to 690V at 50Hz or 60Hz.
- Excludes manual circuit-opening devices and other ballast protection techniques.
-
Safety and Performance
- Ensures intrinsic safety, operating values, time, and sequence which directly impact equipment safety.
- Outlines constructional and operational requirements, including resistance to electric shock, mechanical strength, and protection against moisture, dust, heat, fire, and corrosion.
- Highlights electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) requirements for both emission and immunity.
-
Classification and Information
- Defines thermal ballast protectors as self-resetting devices.
- Requires marking and documentation of key characteristics: manufacturer, type, rated voltage, current, supply nature, mounting method, and performance data.
Applications
The standard is vital for:
- Manufacturers of Ballasts and Thermal Protectors: Ensuring that their products comply with recognized international safety and performance standards for use with tubular fluorescent lamps.
- Testing Laboratories: Applying the defined testing methods and acceptance criteria when certifying thermal protectors and assemblies.
- Product Compliance and Regulatory Approvals: Facilitating global market access by aligning products with IEC safety requirements.
- Design Engineers: Incorporating thermal protection that is reliable, safe, and compliant for use in household and commercial lighting systems.
- Installers and Maintenance Professionals: Helping identify compliant components, minimizing risk of ballast overheating and related hazards.
