IEC 60749-9:2017 is to determine whether the marks on solid state semiconductor devices will remain legible when subjected to the application and removal of labels or the use of solvents and cleaning solutions commonly used during the removal of solder flux residue from the printed circuit board manufacturing process. This test is applicable for all package types. It is suitable for use in qualification and/or process monitor testing. The test is considered non-destructive. Electrical or mechanical rejects can be used for the purpose of this test. This edition includes the following significant technical changes with respect to the previous edition: a) revision to Clause 4 Equipment by a complete rewriting of Clause 3 Terms and definitions; b) additional variant – ‘adhesive tape pull test’.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 60749-9:2017 specifies methods to assess the permanence of marking on solid-state semiconductor devices. The standard is intended to verify that device markings remain legible after exposure to common PCB assembly and cleaning operations, including the application and removal of labels and contact with solvents used to remove solder flux residue. The procedures are non-destructive and suitable for qualification and process monitoring of all package types (excluding laser-branded parts).
Why it matters: legible, permanent markings are essential for traceability, warranty handling, assembly verification, and regulatory compliance across electronics manufacturing and supply chains.
Key Topics
- Scope and applicability: Test applies to solid-state semiconductor packages and is usable for both qualification and ongoing process monitoring.
- Solvent resistance testing: Devices are immersed and brushed in defined solvent variants. The procedure specifies three immersion and brushing cycles, brush stroke count, and rinse/dry inspection. Solvent C is maintained at elevated temperature per the standard; solvent A is used at room temperature ranges noted in the normative text.
- Tape pull (adhesive) test: A tape pull variant evaluates marking adhesion when labels are applied and removed. The test calls for a continuous 90° tape pull at an approximate speed (documented speed), with the operation repeated three times.
- Equipment and safety: Non-reactive containers, specified brushes, and an explosive-proof hot plate (for heated solvents) are called out. Strict ventilation, PPE, and solvent handling precautions are required due to health and flammability risks.
- Failure criteria: A marking is considered failed if it is missing, faded, smeared, blurred, or dislodged to the point it cannot be readily identified from 15 cm in normal room lighting, or when inspected with magnification no greater than 3x.
Applications
- Process qualification for semiconductor assembly and PCB manufacturing lines to ensure markings survive cleaning and labeling steps.
- Incoming inspection and supplier qualification to validate marking durability on parts used in high-reliability electronics.
- Process monitoring to detect drift in ink, coating, or marking processes that could affect traceability and downstream identification.
- Non-destructive verification for rework, repair, and retrofit operations where parts must retain readable identifiers.
Practical benefits: implementing IEC 60749-9 testing reduces field returns caused by unreadable markings, supports compliance with traceability requirements, and helps maintain production yield by catching marking defects early.
