Establishes uniform requirements for measuring the attenuation of optical fibres. Four methods are described: (a) cut-back, (b) insertion loss, (d) backscattering, (d) modelling spectral attenuation. Methods (a), (b) and (c) apply to all categories of class A multimode fibres and class B single-mode fibres. Method (c), backscattering, also covers the location, losses and characterization of point discontinuities. Method (d) has been demonstrated only on class B fibres.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 60793-1-40:2001 is an International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) standard that establishes uniform requirements for measuring the attenuation of optical fibres. Attenuation, in this context, is defined as the loss of signal strength as light travels through an optical fibre, which is crucial for evaluating the performance of fibre optic cables in telecommunications, data networks, and other high-performance applications. This standard contributes to the consistent inspection and quality assessment of optical fibres and cables for commercial and technical purposes.
IEC 60793-1-40 outlines four key methods for the measurement of attenuation:
- Method A: Cut-back
- Method B: Insertion Loss
- Method C: Backscattering
- Method D: Modelling Spectral Attenuation
Each method has specific applications across various fibre categories, with methods A, B, and C applicable to class A multimode and class B single-mode fibres. Notably, Method C (Backscattering) also covers the detection and characterization of point discontinuities, which are vital in troubleshooting and maintaining network reliability.
Key Topics
- Uniform Measurement Procedures: The standard describes strict test requirements to ensure reliable, repeatable, and comparable attenuation measurements across different manufacturers and laboratories.
- Reference Test Method: Method A (cut-back) is designated as the reference test method, to be used as the definitive approach in case of measurement disputes.
- Test Specimens and Preparation: Guidelines are given for sample length, handling, and preparation of fibre end faces to minimize measurement variability.
- Calculation of Results: Methods for determining attenuation (dB), attenuation coefficient (dB/km), and their relation to wavelength and fibre length are standardized for all applicable test methods.
- Test Inclusions: Details such as the optical source, wavelength, specimen identification, and test methodology must be recorded for each measurement.
Applications
IEC 60793-1-40 is widely used in several practical scenarios:
- Fibre Optic Manufacturing: Ensures product quality and consistency by providing standardized attenuation measurement procedures.
- Network Installation and Acceptance: Used by installation teams and network operators to verify the performance of newly installed or repaired optical fibre links.
- Quality Control: Laboratories and quality assurance departments apply these methods during production and before shipment to guarantee fibre compliance with international specifications.
- Research and Product Development: Fibre optic researchers and engineers use these methods to benchmark new materials or improved fibre designs.
- Fault Detection: Method C (backscattering) is particularly valuable for locating faults, characterizing losses, and pinpointing physical discontinuities along the fibre.

Adhering to IEC 60793-1-40 is essential for organizations involved in the manufacture, deployment, or maintenance of optical fibres. This standard facilitates reliable assessment of fibre attenuation, enhancing the quality and interoperability of fibre optic systems worldwide, and enabling efficient integration into both new and existing communications infrastructure. Utilizing the recognized methods within this standard helps ensure that fibre optical networks deliver optimal signal performance, durability, and compliance with global expectations.
