IEC 60793-1-42:2013 establishes uniform requirements for measuring the chromatic dispersion of optical fibre, thereby assisting in the inspection of fibres and cables for commercial purposes. This third edition cancels and replaces the second edition, published in 2007. It constitutes a technical revision. This edition includes the following significant technical changes with respect to the previous edition: - the inclusion of category B6 single-mode fibres; - the deletion of test method D (interferometry). Keywords: chromatic dispersion of optical fibre This publication is to be read in conjunction with IEC 60793-1-1:2008.
Abstract
IEC 60793-1-42:2013 Overview
IEC 60793-1-42:2013 is an international standard developed by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) that defines uniform measurement methods and test procedures for the chromatic dispersion of optical fibres. This third edition updates and replaces the 2007 second edition, introducing key technical revisions such as the inclusion of category B6 single-mode fibres and the removal of test method D (interferometry). The standard is essential for consistent and reliable inspection of fibres and cables for commercial applications.
Chromatic dispersion is a critical parameter in optical fibre performance, affecting signal integrity and transmission speed by causing pulse broadening over distances. This standard facilitates the accurate measurement of this property, enabling manufacturers and users to ensure compliance with quality requirements and optimize fibre optic system design.
Key Topics Covered
IEC 60793-1-42:2013 focuses on several core topics relevant to chromatic dispersion measurement:
-
Uniform Measurement Requirements
Establishes consistent procedures for measuring chromatic dispersion, ensuring comparable results across different fibres and testing environments. -
Measurement Methods
Details three validated methods for chromatic dispersion assessment:- Method A: Phase Shift – measuring phase change as a function of wavelength.
- Method B: Spectral Group Delay in the Time Domain – uses time domain analysis of group delay across wavelengths.
- Method C: Differential Phase Shift – detects dispersion by comparing phase shifts at different wavelengths.
-
Applicable Fibre Categories
Includes guidelines for measuring chromatic dispersion in specific multimode and single-mode fibres:- Category A1 graded-index multimode fibres and sub-categories A4f, A4g, and A4h.
- Single-mode fibres from categories B1, B2, B4, B5, and sub-categories B6_a1 and B6_a2.
-
Data Analysis and Fitting
Explains methods for deriving chromatic dispersion and dispersion slope by fitting group delay data to mathematical models, enabling interpolation across wavelengths. -
Sampling, Apparatus, and Test Procedures
Specifies requirements for specimen length, end faces, launch optics, positioning apparatus, and computational equipment. -
Reporting and Specification
Details the information to be reported with measurements to support commercial acceptance and quality control.
Practical Applications
IEC 60793-1-42:2013 serves as a foundation for various practical uses in the optical fibre industry:
-
Quality Assurance and Inspection
Enables manufacturers and suppliers to verify fibre and cable quality through standardized chromatic dispersion testing, supporting compliance with commercial specifications. -
System Design and Optimization
Provides accurate dispersion data critical for designing optical communication systems with minimal signal distortion, especially for long-haul and high-speed networks. -
Research and Development
Supports R&D efforts in fibre optic technology by defining precise measurement methodologies to evaluate new fibre types and materials. -
Field and Factory Testing
Adaptable to laboratory conditions, factory production lines, and on-site field measurements, facilitating versatile and comprehensive fibre characterization. -
Interoperability and Standardization
Promotes global harmonization in optical fibre testing, fostering interoperability among equipment manufacturers and network operators.
