IEC 60793-1-41:2010 describes three methods for determining and measuring the modal bandwidth of multimode optical fibres (see IEC 60793-2-10, IEC 60793-30 series and IEC 60793-40 series). The baseband frequency response is directly measured in the frequency domain by determining the fibre response to a sinusoidaly modulated light source. The baseband response can also be measured by observing the broadening of a narrow pulse of light. The calculated response is determined using differential mode delay (DMD) data. The three methods are: - Method A - Time domain (pulse distortion) measurement - Method B - Frequency-domain measurement - Method C - Overfilled launch modal bandwidth calculated from differential mode delay (OMBc). The main change with respect to the previous edition is the addition of a third method for determining modal bandwidth based on DMD data and to improve measurement procedures for A4 fibres. This standard should be read in conjunction with IEC 60793-1-1 and IEC 60793-1-2, which cover generic specifications.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 60793-1-41:2010 is an international standard developed by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) that specifies measurement methods and test procedures for determining the bandwidth of multimode optical fibres. This document is part of the IEC 60793 series, which focuses on optical fibre measurement techniques fundamental to fibre optic communication systems and research applications. Specifically, IEC 60793-1-41:2010 details three recognized methods for assessing the modal bandwidth of multimode optical fibres, enabling industry-wide compatibility and reliable performance evaluation.
Key Topics
-
Modal Bandwidth Measurement Methods:
IEC 60793-1-41:2010 introduces three core methods for measuring the modal bandwidth of multimode optical fibres:- Method A – Time Domain (Pulse Distortion) Measurement: Measures bandwidth by observing the broadening of a narrow pulse of light through the fibre.
- Method B – Frequency Domain Measurement: Directly determines the fibre's frequency response by measuring its reaction to a sinusoidally modulated light source.
- Method C – Overfilled Launch Modal Bandwidth Calculated from Differential Mode Delay (OMBc): Calculates bandwidth using DMD data, particularly valuable for certain fibre types.
-
Launch Conditions:
The standard details specific launch conditions such as Overfilled Launch (OFL) and Restricted Mode Launch (RML), ensuring consistent and reproducible measurement outcomes. -
Equipment Requirements:
Guidelines for the apparatus, including light sources, detectors, and data recording systems, are established to ensure accurate modal bandwidth testing. -
Sample Preparation:
Proper preparation of fibre specimens-including end-face finishing, sample packaging, and positioning-is vital for valid and comparable test results. -
Stability and Calibration:
The document outlines procedures to verify measurement system stability and calibration, critical for maintaining measurement precision over time and across devices.
Applications
IEC 60793-1-41:2010 is widely applied in:
-
Fibre Optic Manufacturing Quality Control:
Ensures that multimode optical fibres meet specified bandwidth and performance criteria for reliable data transmission. -
Research and Development:
Provides standardized measurement procedures crucial for innovating next-generation optical fibre technologies and validating new designs. -
