IEC 60793-1-51:2014 provides a practical method for evaluating fibre performance in a defined environment. The purpose of this standard is to determine the suitability of optical fibre sub-category A1a to A1d multimode fibres and class B and C single-mode fibres to withstand the environmental condition of high temperature (dry heat) which may occur in actual use, storage and/or transport. The test is primarily intended to permit the observation of effects of high temperature over a given period. This procedure is conducted in accordance with IEC 60068-2-2, Test Bd. This second edition cancels and replaces the first edition, published in 2001, and constitutes a technical revision. This edition includes the following significant technical changes with respect to the previous edition: - harmonizing the content with sectional specifications of relevant fibre types; - extending the applicability of the document to class C single-mode fibres. Keywords: optical fibre sub-category A1a to A1d multimode fibres, class B and C single-mode fibres, high temperature (dry heat)
Abstract
Overview
IEC 60793-1-51:2014 is an international standard published by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) that specifies measurement methods and test procedures for evaluating the performance of optical fibres under dry heat (steady state) conditions. This standard focuses on assessing the durability and suitability of specific optical fibre sub-categories-A1a to A1d multimode fibres and class B and C single-mode fibres-when exposed to high temperatures typically encountered in use, storage, and transport environments.
The primary purpose of the test outlined in this standard is to observe the effects of prolonged dry heat exposure (+85 °C for 30 days) on fibre attenuation and overall performance. The methodology follows the environmental testing framework established in IEC 60068-2-2 (Test Bd) with specific adaptations relevant to optical fibres.
Key Topics
-
Scope of Application:
IEC 60793-1-51:2014 applies to optical fibre sub-categories A1a to A1d multimode fibres, and class B and class C single-mode fibres. While primarily designed for these categories, further studies are suggested for other fibre types. -
Test Conditions:
- Temperature: +85 °C dry heat exposure
- Duration: 30 days
- Humidity: Uncontrolled but recommended minimum 50% relative humidity at test start
- Heating and cooling rates: ≤ 1 °C/min average over any 5 min period to ensure controlled thermal stress
-
Specimen Preparation:
Specimens must have a minimum length of 1,000 m for multimode fibres and 2,000 m for single-mode fibres. Fibres should be loosely coiled with a minimum bend diameter of 150 mm to avoid macrobend-induced losses. Use of dusting powder such as talcum is recommended to prevent coil friction. -
Measurement Methods:
Attenuation is measured before, during (once thermal equilibrium is reached), and after conditioning using IEC 60793-1-40 compliant techniques, including insertion loss and backscattering methods. Additional optical or mechanical property testing may be specified based on detailed product specifications. -
Pass/Fail Criteria:
Specific pass/fail criteria are determined by comparative analysis of attenuation and mechanical data collected pre- and post-exposure. -
Recovery Phase:
After thermal conditioning, fibres undergo a recovery period at standard atmospheric conditions for between 12 and 48 hours to monitor any recovery or permanent changes in performance.
Applications
This standard is essential for manufacturers, system designers, and testing laboratories involved in:
-
Optical Fibre Quality Assurance:
Ensuring fibre products meet performance requirements under extreme temperature conditions relevant to intended uses. -
Environmental Durability Assessment:
Verifying fibre resilience during long-term exposure to heat encountered in outdoor installations, storage, and transportation scenarios. -
Product Specification Compliance:
Supporting conformity with sectional specifications for various optical fibre classes as outlined in IEC 60793 series, particularly for fibres used in telecommunications, data centers, and industrial applications. -
Research and Development:
Providing a standardized test method for evaluating new fibre compositions or coatings against thermal aging effects.
