IEC 60793-1-53:2014 provides a practical method for evaluating fibre performance in a defined environment. The purpose of this standard is to define a test that determines the suitability of sub-category A1a to A1d multimode fibres and class B and C single-mode fibres to withstand the environmental condition of immersion in distilled or demineralized water which may occur in actual use, storage and/or transport. The test is primarily intended to permit the observation of effects of immersion in water over a given period. This procedure is conducted in accordance with IEC 60068-2-18, Test R. This second edition cancels and replaces the first edition, published in 2001, and constitutes a technical revision. This edition includes the following significant technical changes with respect to the previous edition: - harmonizing the content with sectional specifications of relevant fibre types; - extending the applicability of the standard to Class C single-mode fibres. Keywords: sub-category A1a to A1d multimode fibres, class B and C single-mode fibres, immersion in distilled or demineralized water
Abstract
Overview
IEC 60793-1-53:2014 is an international standard developed by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) that specifies measurement methods and test procedures for water immersion tests on optical fibres. This standard provides a practical and reliable approach to evaluate the performance of optical fibres when immersed in distilled or demineralized water-conditions that may occur during actual use, storage, or transport. Primarily targeting sub-category A1a to A1d multimode fibres and class B and C single-mode fibres, it ensures these fibre types can withstand environmental exposure to water without degradation impacting their optical or mechanical properties.
The test method follows the environmental testing procedure described in IEC 60068-2-18 (Test R) but simplifies it by excluding the “head of water” parameter, as it is unnecessary for optical fibre immersion assessments. The standard's second edition harmonizes content with sectional fibre specifications and extends applicability to Class C single-mode fibres, highlighting its relevance to a broad range of fibre optic products.
Key Topics
- Test scope and fibres covered:
- Multimode fibres: sub-categories A1a through A1d
- Single-mode fibres: class B and class C
- Immersion environment:
- Use of distilled, demineralized, or deionized water with pH between 5.0 and 8.0
- Temperature maintained at 23 °C ± 5 °C
- Immersion period of 30 days
- Specimen requirements:
- Minimum fibre length: 1,000 m for A1 sub-categories, 2,000 m for class B and C fibres
- Fiber ends kept out of water, loosely coiled with minimum bend diameter of 150 mm to prevent macrobend effects
- Measurements before, during, and after immersion:
- Optical attenuation at specified wavelengths (per IEC 60793-1-40)
- Coating strip force (per IEC 60793-1-32) to assess mechanical coating integrity
- Testing procedure and conditions:
- Preconditioning (if specified by relevant specification)
- 30-day immersion according to IEC 60068-2-18, excluding head of water test
- Controlled recovery period of 12 to 48 hours under standard conditions
- Pass/fail criteria:
- Defined in relevant sectional specifications IEC 60793-2-10 (A1 fibres), IEC 60793-2-50 (class B), and IEC 60793-2-60 (class C)
- Documentation and reporting:
- Test date and title, specimen identification and length
- Wavelength used, attenuation changes observed, coating strip force data
- Initial water pH and description of testing equipment upon request
Applications
IEC 60793-1-53:2014 is critical to industries relying on optical fibre communication and sensing technologies where exposure to moisture or water is unavoidable. Key applications include:
- Telecommunications infrastructure: Ensures fibre optic cables maintain performance during transport, installation in damp environments, or accidental water exposure.
- Submarine and undersea cable systems: Validates multimode and single-mode fibres against long-term water immersion effects, critical for submarine cable reliability.
- Data centers and enterprise networks: Confirms fibre durability during storage and handling where moisture ingress may occur.
- Industrial and military uses: Supports robust fibre optic performance in harsh environments with high humidity or potential water contact.
- Quality assurance and product development: Provides standard test protocols for manufacturers to certify fibre optic products meet water immersion durability standards.
