IEC 60793-2:2019 contains the general specifications for both multimode and single-mode optical fibres. Sectional specifications for each of the four categories of multimode fibres: A1, A2, A3, and A4 (part of the multimode fibre class A) contain requirements specific to each category. Sectional specifications for each of the three single-mode fibre classes, B, C and D contain requirements common to each class. Each sectional specification includes family specifications (in normative annexes) that contain requirements for the applicable category or sub-categories. These sub-categories are distinguished on the basis of different fibre types or applications. The requirements of this document apply to all classes. Each sectional specification contains the requirements that are common to all the family specifications that are within it. These common requirements are copied to the family specification for ease of reference. Tests or measurement methods are defined for each specified attribute. Where possible, these definitions are by reference to an IEC International Standard (see IEC 60793-1 series) – otherwise the test or measurement method is outlined in the relevant sectional specification. This ninth edition cancels and replaces the eighth edition published in 2015. This edition constitutes a technical revision. This edition includes the following significant technical changes with respect to the previous edition: - introduction of the revised fibre designations for most A1 sub-category fibres and all class B single-mode fibres; - addition of the new fibre model (A1-OM5) defined for A1 category; - addition of class D polarization maintaining fibres. Keywords: specifications for both multimode and single-mode optical fibres
Abstract
Overview
IEC 60793-2:2019 - "Optical fibres - Part 2: Product specifications - General" defines the general product specifications that apply to both multimode and single‑mode optical fibres. It sets the framework for sectional specifications (A1, A2, A3, A4 for multimode; B, C and D for single‑mode and polarization‑maintaining) and the family specifications that detail sub‑category requirements. The standard specifies attributes, test/measurement definitions and quality assurance responsibilities and is intended to be read alongside the IEC 60793‑1 measurement and test methods series.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope and structure: Establishes a hierarchy of requirements - sectional specifications (per category/class) and normative family annexes (per fibre type or application).
- Multimode categories (Class A): A1 (graded glass core/glass cladding), A2, A3 and A4 with sub‑categories and specific index‑profile definitions.
- Single‑mode classes (B, C, D): Defines common requirements for glass core/glass cladding single‑mode fibres, including the new Class D polarization‑maintaining fibres added in this edition.
- Fibre designations: Introduces revised designations for most A1 sub‑categories and for class B single‑mode fibres; adds the new A1‑OM5 multimode fibre model.
- Tests and measurements: Each specified attribute has defined test or measurement methods-preferably by reference to IEC 60793‑1 series; otherwise methods are outlined in the sectional specification.
- Construction and materials: Requirements for core, cladding, primary/secondary coatings and coloured coatings/buffers, including interface and colour conventions (see IEC 60304).
- Quality assurance: Suppliers must establish QA and QC procedures; acceptance tests and sampling to be agreed between supplier and customer.
Practical applications and users
IEC 60793-2:2019 is used by:
- Fibre manufacturers to specify product families, ensure compliance and label fibre types (e.g., OM5).
- Component and cable designers who need standardized fibre attributes for system design and compatibility.
- Test laboratories and QA teams performing acceptance and type testing using IEC 60793‑1 referenced methods.
- Network architects and procurement defining performance and interoperability requirements for LAN, data centre and telecom deployments.
- Certification bodies and regulators verifying conformance to international product specifications.
By standardizing attributes, measurements and designations, IEC 60793‑2 improves interoperability, supply chain clarity and reliable performance for both multimode and single‑mode optical fibres.
