IEC 60793-2-30:2015 is applicable to sub-categories A3a, A3b, A3c, A3d, A3e, A3f and A3g. These fibres are used or can be incorporated in different information transmission equipment, other applications employing similar light transmitting techniques as well as fibre optic cables. Three types of requirements apply to these fibres: - general requirements, as defined in IEC 60793-2; - specific requirements common to the category A3 multimode fibres covered in this standard and which are given in Clause 3; - particular requirements applicable to the individual sub-categories or specific applications (e.g. automotive or industrial applications), which are defined in the normative sub-category annexes. This fourth edition cancels and replaces the third edition published in 2012 and constitutes a technical revision. This edition includes the following significant technical changes with respect to the previous edition: - specified test specimen length and measurement details for core diameter and NAff measurements have been added; - two new sub-categories have been added; - NAth is replaced by Naff. Keywords: category A3 multimode fibres
Abstract
Overview
IEC 60793-2-30:2015 - "Optical fibres – Part 2-30: Product specifications – Sectional specification for category A3 multimode fibres" defines sectional product requirements for category A3 multimode fibres and their seven sub‑categories (A3a, A3b, A3c, A3d, A3e, A3f, A3g). The standard complements the general requirements in IEC 60793-2 by specifying dimensional, mechanical, transmission and environmental attributes appropriate to multimode fibres used in information transmission equipment, fibre optic cables and similar light‑transmitting applications. Edition 4 (2015) is a technical revision that adds measurement details (including test specimen length), introduces two new sub‑categories and replaces NAth with NAff as the numerical aperture parameter.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Three-tier requirement structure
- General requirements from IEC 60793-2 (baseline definitions and methods).
- Category‑level requirements common to all A3 multimode fibres (Clause 3 in the standard).
- Normative sub‑category annexes (A–G) that define particular requirements for each A3a–A3g fibre type and for specific applications (e.g., automotive, industrial).
- Dimensional requirements
- Core and cladding dimensions and related measurement methods; the standard specifies specimen length and measurement details for core diameter.
- Mechanical requirements
- Tensile, bend and handling-related tests and attributes appropriate to intended application and sub‑category.
- Transmission requirements
- Attenuation, bandwidth and numerical aperture (now NAff) measurement methods and limits as applicable per sub‑category.
- Environmental requirements
- Exposure tests and performance verification under temperature, humidity, chemical and mechanical stress conditions defined per sub‑category.
- Annex structure
- Normative Annexes A–G list the specific dimensional, mechanical, transmission and environmental attributes and test methods for A3a through A3g fibres.
Practical applications and target users
- Applications:
- Short‑reach and medium‑reach multimode links in communication systems, fibre optic cables for building, industrial networks, automotive fibre installations and other light‑transmitting equipment.
- Primary users:
- Optical fibre and cable manufacturers (product specification and QA),
- Test laboratories and conformity assessment bodies (measurement and verification),
- System integrators and OEMs specifying multimode fibre for assemblies and installations,
- Procurement and standards teams ensuring compliance with international product specifications.
Related standards
- IEC 60793-2 (general product specifications for optical fibres) - provides baseline definitions and test methods referenced by IEC 60793-2-30.
- Other parts of the IEC 60793 series cover additional fibre categories and complementary measurement procedures.
IEC 60793-2-30:2015 is essential for anyone specifying, producing or testing category A3 multimode fibres, offering a structured, normative basis for dimensional, mechanical, transmission and environmental performance across seven sub‑categories.
