IEC 60794-1-126:2026 defines the test procedures used to establish uniform requirements for mechanical performance - galloping. It applies to optical fibre cables like ADSS, OPGW or OPPC that can be exposed to galloping phenomena. See IEC 60794-1-2 for general requirements and definitions and for a complete reference guide to test methods of all types. This first edition cancels and replaces Method E26 of the first edition of IEC 60794‑1‑21 published in 2015. This edition constitutes a technical revision. This edition includes the following significant technical changes with respect to the previous edition: a) Addition of "for ADSS" and "for OPGW and OPPC" in 4.7, a); b) Addition of "L4" in Figure 1 and in 4.7, b); c) Change of the specified static sag angle to ≤ 1,5±0,5°; d) Improvement of Figure 1;
Abstract
Overview
IEC 60794-1-126:2026 is an international standard published by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), specifying the basic optical cable test procedures for mechanical galloping, identified as Method E26. Mechanical galloping poses significant risks to aerial optical fibre cable installations, such as those found in all-dielectric self-supporting (ADSS), optical ground wire (OPGW), and optical phase conductor (OPPC) cables. This standard establishes uniform requirements necessary to evaluate and ensure the mechanical performance and integrity of optical fibre cables when subjected to dynamic mechanical stresses like those experienced during galloping events.
This first edition supersedes Method E26 of IEC 60794-1-21:2015 and includes technical improvements and updates for more robust testing and reporting. The document should be used in conjunction with IEC 60794-1-2 for general guidance on optical cable test procedures.
Key Topics
-
Scope of Application:
Applies to optical fibre cables such as ADSS, OPGW, and OPPC, particularly those installed in environments prone to dynamic mechanical phenomena like galloping caused by ice or wet snow accumulation. -
Test Purpose:
Evaluates both mechanical fatigue and the optical performance of fibres within cables when subjected to simulated galloping stresses. The procedure aims to identify potential weaknesses and ensure robust cable and hardware design for aerial installations. -
Test Procedure Highlights:
- Cables are subjected to at least 100,000 galloping cycles at a single loop resonant frequency.
- The setup involves securing cable sections and exciting them in the vertical plane to simulate galloping movements.
- Static sag angle in the test setup is specified as ≤ 1.5 ± 0.5°.
- Continuous monitoring and periodic recording of optical attenuation (change in signal loss).
- Physical inspection for damage post-testing.
- Reporting and specifying relevant installation and performance parameters.
-
Significant Updates from Previous Editions:
- Enhanced specifications for different cable types (ADSS, OPGW, OPPC).
- Introduction of detailed dimensional parameters (such as loop length L4 in test setups).
- Improved accuracy in sag angle requirements and reporting.
Applications
IEC 60794-1-126:2026 is especially valuable in the following contexts:
-
Design Verification:
Cable manufacturers and system designers use this standard to verify that new cable designs for overhead installation can withstand galloping-induced stresses without compromising optical transmission or mechanical integrity. -
Quality Assurance:
Procurement and installation teams rely on these standardized tests to ensure product consistency, durability, and long-term reliability in regions where cables are exposed to severe climate conditions that may trigger galloping. -
Conformity Assessment:
Laboratories and certification bodies use these harmonized test methods to assess compliance of fibre optic cables with international quality and safety standards, facilitating global acceptance and market access. -
Risk Mitigation:
Utility companies utilize these procedures for pre-deployment evaluation, minimizing the likelihood of outages or physical failure stemming from mechanical fatigue due to galloping on existing or planned aerial cable routes.
