IEC 60794-208:2025 describes test procedures to be used in establishing uniform requirements for optical fibre cables for the pneumatic resistance environmental property, for unfilled cables which are protected by gas pressurization. This document applies to optical fibre cables for use with telecommunication equipment and devices employing similar techniques, and to cables having a combination of both optical fibres and electrical conductors. NOTE Throughout the document, the wording "optical cable" can also include optical fibre units, microduct fibre units, etc. This first edition of IEC 60794‑1‑208 cancels and replaces method F8 of the second edition of IEC 60794‑1‑22 published in 2017. This edition constitutes a technical revision. This edition includes the following significant technical changes with respect to the previous edition: a) the form of the formula for pneumatic resistance is modified for ease of calculation with test pressures other than 62 kPa; b) details to be reported are added. The content of the corrigendum 1 (2025-12) has been included in this copy.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 60794-1-208:2025 is an international standard developed by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) that specifies the basic optical cable test procedures, with a focus on environmental test methods for pneumatic resistance (Method F8). This standard is designed for optical fibre cables, especially unfilled cables that are protected by gas pressurization. It applies to cables for telecommunication networks, as well as cables combining optical fibres and electrical conductors.
This first edition revises and replaces Method F8 from the previous IEC 60794-1-22 (2017), offering technical improvements for easier application in various test settings. The document standardizes the requirements and reporting for pneumatic resistance testing, aiming at consistent, reliable performance of optical fibre cables in pressurized environments.
Key Topics
- Pneumatic Resistance Testing: Defines procedures to evaluate the resistance of optical fibre cables to gas flow, which is crucial for cables used in environments where gas pressurization serves as a protective measure.
- Test Methods and Procedures: Specifies the sample preparation, necessary apparatus (including pneumatic equipment, flow-meter, barometer, and thermometer), and step-by-step testing processes.
- Applicable Cable Types: Includes unfilled optical fibre cables, microduct fibre units, optical fibre units, and hybrid cables with electrical conductors.
- Uniform Requirements: Establishes clear criteria for maximum pneumatic resistance, sample length, and allowed test pressures (with emphasis on pressures other than the default 62 kPa).
- Reporting Details: Enhances transparency and traceability by specifying exact details to be documented in test reports, such as cable type, pneumatic resistances in both flow directions, sample length, and applied pressure.
Applications
IEC 60794-1-208:2025 is essential for manufacturers, quality assurance personnel, and testing laboratories involved in the development, qualification, and acceptance testing of optical fibre cables for:
- Telecommunication Infrastructures: Ensures the long-term functionality of cables in networks where gas pressurization is employed to protect against moisture ingress, corrosion, and other environmental challenges.
- Broadband and Data Communication: Applies to fibre optic networks in public utility systems, campus infrastructures, and industrial settings where environmental reliability is critical.
- Hybrid Cables: Relevant for cables combining data and power functions, ensuring both optical and electrical components are protected under gas-pressurized conditions.
- Regulatory Compliance: Provides documentation and verification practices necessary for meeting local, national, or international regulatory and customer requirements.
By adhering to this standard, organizations can improve cable reliability, lower maintenance costs, and provide robust documentation supporting product claims and regulatory submissions.
Related Standards
For a comprehensive approach to optical fibre cable quality and environmental testing, IEC 60794-1-208:2025 should be considered alongside:
- IEC 60794-1-2: Generic specification for basic optical cable test procedures - General guidance, which offers foundational information for all optical cable test methods.
- IEC 60794-1-22: Previously contained Method F8 and still provides context for basic test procedures.
- Other Parts of IEC 60794 Series: Covering mechanical, transmission, and other environmental test methods relevant to optical fibre cables.
- ISO/IEC Directives: For broader framework and terminology harmonization in standardization efforts.
Incorporating IEC 60794-1-208:2025 in testing protocols supports cable integrity and performance in gas-pressurized environments, which is vital for modern telecommunication and data infrastructures.
