IEC 60794-1-220:2022 defines a test standard to determine the ability of an optical fibre cable to withstand the effects of a controlled salt atmosphere. This document applies to optical ground wire (OPGW) and optical phase conductor (OPPC). An optical ground wire and optical phase conductor are made of multiple metallic wires that are exposed to the environment without any insulating or protective sheath and contain optical fibres.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 60794-1-220:2022 is an international standard published by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) that establishes environmental test methods specifically for optical fibre cables. This part of the IEC 60794 series focuses on the salt spray corrosion test (Method F20) designed to assess the durability and corrosion resistance of optical fibre cables exposed to saline environments. The standard is pivotal for ensuring the long-term reliability of optical ground wires (OPGW) and optical phase conductors (OPPC), which feature metallic wires exposed to the environment without insulation, containing optical fibres.
Key Topics
-
Scope: The standard applies exclusively to optical fibre cables composed of multiple metallic wires exposed to the environment, such as OPGW and OPPC. These cables are critical components in power and telecommunication networks.
-
Test Objective: To evaluate the resistance of optical fibre cables to a controlled salt atmosphere simulating coastal or marine conditions, determining how well cables withstand corrosive influences.
-
Test Samples: Three cable samples of 75 cm ± 5 cm are prepared from reels. Ends are sealed with heat shrink tubing or silicone to protect cable interiors during testing.
-
Testing Apparatus: Salt spray chambers compliant with IEC 60068-2-11 are required to simulate a controlled salt mist environment.
-
Test Procedure:
- Pre-test cleaning: Samples must be free of contaminants with care taken to avoid debris during handling; cleaning methods include forced air supply where applicable.
- Conditioning: Samples are placed in the test chamber, suspended at a 15° to 30° angle to simulate real-world installation, and subjected to salt spray continuously for 1,000 hours.
- Post-test cleaning: Salt residues are removed carefully with water not exceeding 38 °C, followed by drying.
- Visual Inspection: Samples are visually examined for corrosion damage using the naked eye and low magnification lenses, with brushing applied only to heavier deposits without disturbing underlying metal.
-
Acceptance Criteria:
- No pitting on aluminium-clad steel wires that exposes steel strength members.
- Aluminium wires must not exhibit point pitting deeper than 10% of their diameter.
- Optical fibre units must remain undamaged without significant material loss, deformation, or corrosion beyond 10% of tube thickness.
- Aluminium coatings on tubes must remain intact without bare stainless steel exposure.
- Coatings on other tubing types must similarly remain undisturbed.
Applications
IEC 60794-1-220:2022 is essential for manufacturers, field engineers, and quality assurance professionals involved in the production, installation, and maintenance of optical fibre cables used in:
- Power Utility Networks: Ensuring corrosion resistance of OPGW and OPPC cables deployed in outdoor power transmission systems, particularly in coastal and marine environments.
- Telecommunications Infrastructure: Assessing cable durability in harsh environments impacted by salt-laden air to maintain network integrity.
- Environmental Testing Labs: Providing standardized salt spray testing methods for evaluating new cable designs or materials.
- Research and Development: Guiding material science and engineering improvements for corrosion resistance in optical cable manufacturing.
By adhering to these salt spray corrosion test methods, stakeholders can proactively prevent premature cable failures, resulting in enhanced reliability, reduced maintenance costs, and improved system longevity.
