IEC 60794-1-209:2024 defines test procedures to be used in establishing uniform requirements for the environmental performance of: - optical fibre cables for use with telecommunication equipment and devices employing similar techniques; and - cables having a combination of both optical fibres and electrical conductors. Throughout this document, the wording "optical cable" can also include optical fibre units, microduct fibre units, etc. This document defines a test standard to determine cable aging performance by high temperature exposure and temperature cycling in order to simulate lifetime behaviour of the attenuation of cables, or physical attributes. See IEC 60794‑1‑2 for a reference guide to test methods of all types and for general requirements and definitions. This document partially cancels and replaces IEC 60794‑1‑22:2017. This edition constitutes a technical revision. This edition includes the following significant technical changes with respect to IEC 60794‑1‑22:2017: a) the ambient temperature test condition has been defined as per IEC 60794‑1‑2; b) all the maximum allowable attenuation increase values for single-mode and multimode fibres have been deleted, and have been included in the list of details to be specified.
Abstract
IEC 60794-1-209:2024 Overview
IEC 60794-1-209:2024 is an international standard defining generic specifications and basic test procedures for optical fibre cables, focusing specifically on environmental test methods related to ageing (Method F9). Published by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), this standard targets optical fibre cables used in telecommunication equipment as well as hybrid cables combining optical fibres with electrical conductors.
The primary objective of this standard is to provide consistent and uniform test procedures for evaluating the environmental performance and ageing characteristics of optical fibre cables. It simulates the lifecycle behavior of cables exposed to high temperatures and temperature cycling to assess changes in attenuation and physical attributes over time.
This 2024 edition cancels and replaces IEC 60794-1-22:2017, incorporating technical revisions such as standardized ambient temperature conditions aligned with IEC 60794-1-2 and moving maximum allowable attenuation increase values to specification details.
Key Topics Covered
-
Scope and Application
Applies to optical fibre cables and optical fibre units, including microduct fibre units, used in telecommunications or similar technologies. Also relevant for cables integrating both optical fibres and electrical conductors. -
Ageing Test Procedure (Method F9)
The method involves subjecting cables to elevated temperatures (default 85 °C for 168 hours) followed by temperature cycling to simulate real-world ageing effects on attenuation and physical cable properties. This procedure helps model but does not precisely predict end-of-life performance. -
Test Sample and Apparatus
Sampling procedures correspond to those defined in IEC 60794-1-201 (Method F1 - Temperature Cycling). The required testing apparatus follows the same specifications. -
Test Execution
Method F9 is usually conducted after temperature cycling (Method F1). Attenuation measurements are taken at an established ambient temperature reference both before and after ageing and cycling procedures. The cable undergoes a final ambient hold phase of 24 hours before attenuation is re-measured. -
Performance Criteria
Acceptance criteria depend on relevant specifications that define allowable changes in attenuation. Failure modes include optical continuity loss, optical transmittance degradation, or physical damage. Colour permanence of cable elements is also evaluated as per normative Annex A. -
Specification Details
Test temperature, test duration, maximum permissible attenuation changes, and any additional physical testing need to be clearly defined within the applicable cable specifications.
Practical Applications
-
Telecommunication Infrastructure Testing
Ensures fibre optic cables meet long-term reliability standards under environmental stress from heat and temperature fluctuations experienced in field conditions. -
Cable Manufacturer Quality Control
Provides manufacturers with a uniform procedure to validate ageing resistance and durability of optical cables, critical for warranty and compliance claims. -
Design and Development
Empowers designers to model the ageing behavior of new fibre cable constructions, facilitating improvements in materials and protective sheathing technologies. -
Hybrid Cable Assessment
Supports testing for cables combining electrical and optical components to guarantee integrated system environmental endurance.

Summary
IEC 60794-1-209:2024 is a critical standard for assessing the environmental ageing effects on optical fibre cables, ensuring their performance and reliability in telecommunication networks under temperature-related stresses. It standardizes testing methods to simulate lifetime conditions, allowing manufacturers, network operators, and designers to evaluate optical attenuation stability and physical durability with consistent, internationally recognized procedures.
