IEC 60794-1-213:2024 defines test procedures to be used in establishing uniform requirements for the environmental performance of microduct. The test determines the capability of the microduct to withstand internal pressure without leakage and visible damage. This document applies to microduct used for installation of microduct cable or fibre unit by blowing. Throughout this document, the wording "microduct" can also include protected microduct(s). See IEC 60794-1-2 for a reference guide to test methods of all types and for general requirements and definitions. This document partially cancels and replaces IEC 60794-1-22:2017. This edition constitutes a technical revision. This edition includes the following significant technical changes with respect to IEC 60794-1-22:2017: a) pressure gauge used to monitor internal pressure of microduct added as part of the test apparatus; b) "test temperature" added to the details to be specified; c) added a new subclause “4.7 Details to be reported”.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 60794-1-213:2024 sets out test procedures for determining the environmental performance of microducts used in optical fibre cable installations. This international standard from the IEC specifies the method to assess the capability of microducts to withstand internal pressure during blowing installation, verifying that there is no leakage or visible damage under specified conditions. Microducts, including protected variants, are widely used as conduits for microduct cables or fibre units, and robust pressure resistance is critical for reliable network deployment. This standard partially cancels and technically revises previous guidance in IEC 60794-1-22:2017, focusing specifically on the microduct pressure withstand test (Method F13).
Key Topics
-
Microduct Pressure Withstand (Method F13):
Details procedures for ensuring microducts can endure the internal pressure associated with cable blowing installations. -
Test Conditions:
- Sample preparation: Microducts are cut carefully to prevent air leakage.
- Use of test apparatus including a pressure source and a pressure gauge for monitoring.
- Specification of test temperature and pressure based on application needs.
- Test duration and observation for any signs of leaks or damage.
-
Significant Updates in 2024 Edition:
- Requirement for a pressure gauge as part of the standard test apparatus.
- Inclusion of "test temperature" in specified parameters.
- Addition of detailed test reporting requirements.
-
Safety Recommendations:
- Personal protective equipment (PPE) is recommended during testing.
- Conducting tests in controlled environments to minimize hazards.
Applications
The procedures defined in IEC 60794-1-213:2024 are widely applicable to:
-
Telecommunications and Data Networks:
Ensuring microducts maintain integrity during high-pressure fibre installation for FTTH (Fibre to the Home), FTTx, or backbone deployments. -
Network Infrastructure Projects:
Supporting quality assurance in large-scale projects demanding consistent microduct performance, especially where lengths of duct are installed by blowing or jetting. -
Manufacturing and Quality Control:
Enabling producers of microducts to validate their products against international specifications, improving reliability and customer confidence. -
Third-party Testing and Certification:
Providing a uniform reference for testing laboratories and certifiers to assess microduct products for market compliance.

Practical Value
Implementing IEC 60794-1-213:2024 supports:
-
Operational Reliability:
By verifying pressure resistance, network installers reduce the risk of microduct failure during deployment, leading to more reliable and longer-lasting infrastructure. -
International Compliance:
Adhering to IEC standards helps manufacturers and network operators meet global procurement requirements. -
Quality Assurance:
The documented test procedure and reporting requirements provide transparency and traceability, essential for contracts and quality systems in fibre optic network supply chains.
For organizations involved in the design, production, installation, or certification of microducts for optical fibre cables, IEC 60794-1-213:2024 is an essential reference for ensuring consistent environmental performance and pressure withstand capability.
