IEC 60794-1-308: 2023 describes test procedures to evaluates the degree of permanent twist in an uncabled ribbon or in a cabled optical fibre ribbon. This document applies to optical fibre ribbons in optical cables for use with telecommunication equipment and devices employing similar techniques, and to optical fibre ribbons in cables having a combination of both optical fibres and electrical conductors. This document is not applicable to partially-bonded ribbons. The method for partially-bonded ribbons is under consideration. Throughout the document, the wording "optical cable" can also include optical fibre units, microduct fibre units, etc. NOTE The environmental testing of optical fibre ribbon would be valuable for some applications. Useful information about suitable test methods can be found in the optical fibre standards IEC 60793-1-50, IEC 60793‑1‑51, IEC 60793‑1‑52, and IEC 60793-1-53.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 60794-1-308:2023 is an international standard developed by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) that specifies the ribbon residual twist test method (method G8) for optical fibre cables. This document focuses on the procedures for evaluating the degree of permanent twist in both uncabled and cabled optical fibre ribbons. The standard is relevant to optical fibre cables used in telecommunications, as well as cables that combine optical fibres and electrical conductors.
Residual twist is an important characteristic that can affect the performance and reliability of optical fibre ribbons within cable assemblies. IEC 60794-1-308:2023 provides a consistent framework for conducting this test, ensuring uniform results and supporting quality assurance in the production and application of fibre optic cables.
Key Topics
Core topics and requirements covered in IEC 60794-1-308:2023 include:
- Scope of Application: The standard covers both uncabled and cabled optical fibre ribbons used in telecommunication systems and hybrid cables. It does not apply to partially-bonded ribbons.
- Sample Selection: Detailed directions for preparing test samples, including preconditioning to simulate real-world aging.
- Apparatus Requirements: Specifications for equipment setup, such as vertical mounting, appropriate clamping, and standardized test weights.
- Test Procedure: Step-by-step methodology to measure residual twist, including environmental preconditioning, sample handling, measurement, and calculation of results.
- Result Requirements: Criteria for acceptable levels of residual twist, helping manufacturers and users ensure compliance.
- Documentation: Information that must be reported in the detail specification, such as specific preconditioning conditions, gauge lengths, and test tensions.
Applications
IEC 60794-1-308:2023 is widely applicable in:
- Telecommunications: Ensuring performance of optical fibre ribbons in high-speed data transmission cables.
- Cable Manufacturing: Supporting quality control and product validation for optical fibre cable manufacturers.
- Hybrid Cables: Assessing ribbon twist performance for cables combining optical fibres and electrical conductors in complex installations.
- Research and Development: Providing a repeatable, recognized testing method for developing new fibre cable products and technologies.
By adhering to this standard, stakeholders across the fibre optics industry can ensure that optical fibre ribbon cables demonstrate minimal residual twist, which is critical for installation, splicing, and long-term cable reliability.
Related Standards
Key standards referenced and related to IEC 60794-1-308:2023 include:
- IEC 60794-1-2 – Generic specification for basic optical cable test procedures, providing general guidance.
- IEC 60794-1-23 (now withdrawn and replaced by 60794-1-308 and others) – Previously provided multi-method compendium before the restructure.
- IEC 60793-1-50, -51, -52, -53 – A suite of standards defining environmental and mechanical test procedures for optical fibres, such as damp heat, dry heat, temperature change, and water immersion.
Conclusion:
Following IEC 60794-1-308:2023 ensures quality assurance and consistency in the measurement of residual twist in fibre optic ribbons. This standard is imperative for manufacturers, quality managers, and engineers involved in the design, production, and installation of optical fibre cables in telecommunications and related fields. By referencing and applying this method, organizations can meet international requirements for optical cable reliability and performance.
