IEC 60794-1-402:2021 applies to the test intended to evaluate the impact of a lightning strike on an optical ground wire (OPGW), optical phase conductor (OPPC) or optical attached cable (OPAC). This first edition cancels and replaces the first edition of IEC 60794-1-24 published in 2014. This edition constitutes a technical revision. This edition includes the following significant technical changes with respect to the previous edition: a) OPPC cables are included.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 60794-1-402:2021 is an international standard developed by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) that specifies basic optical cable test procedures for evaluating the impact of a lightning strike-using Method H2-on three types of optical fibre cables: Optical Ground Wire (OPGW), Optical Phase Conductor (OPPC), and Optical Attached Cable (OPAC). This standard is intended to ensure the reliability and safety of optical cables under lightning stress, supporting critical infrastructure in the energy and telecommunications sectors.
This first edition supersedes IEC 60794-1-24:2014, introducing significant technical updates, most notably the inclusion of OPPC cables.
Key Topics
- Scope of the Standard
IEC 60794-1-402:2021 details procedures to assess optical fibre cable performance when subjected to simulated lightning strikes. - Cable Types Covered
- Optical Ground Wire (OPGW)
- Optical Phase Conductor (OPPC)
- Optical Attached Cable (OPAC)
- Test Parameters and Methods
The standard prescribes test classes (0-3) that define current, duration, and charge levels for simulated lightning strikes. - Sample Preparation
Guidance is given on cable sample length, installation for testing, and the selection of fibres for monitoring and measurement. - Testing Procedures
Detailed instructions are provided for setting up test apparatus, applying mechanical load, conducting multiple lightning strikes, and monitoring optical attenuation. - Performance Criteria
- Permissible changes in optical attenuation
- Requirements for residual mechanical strength post-test
- Reporting Requirements
Specifies test details and results that must be included in reports, supporting clear documentation and repeatability.
Applications
IEC 60794-1-402:2021 is highly relevant to manufacturers, utilities, and network operators involved with:
- Power Transmission Infrastructure
Ensuring that OPGW and OPPC cables provide reliable data and grounding under adverse weather conditions, particularly lightning activity. - Telecommunications Networks
Protecting the integrity of data transmission over optical fibre networks deployed on or along power lines. - Product Testing and Certification
Providing standardized test methods for certifying cables against lightning-induced damage, enabling compliance with international requirements. - Cable Design and Comparison
Facilitates the direct comparison of different cable designs' resilience to lightning, helping engineers select suitable cabling solutions for exposed installations.
Related Standards
