IEC 60794-2-40:2008 is part of a family specification covering buffered A4 fibres and cabled A4 fibres for indoor use. See IEC 60794-2-41 and IEC 60794-2-42 for blank detail specifications. This second edition cancels and replaces the first edition published in 2003, of which it constitutes a technical revision. In addition to covering buffered A4 fibres, as did the first edition, this second edition now also covers cabled A4 fibres. This standard is to be used in conjunction with IEC 60794-1-1, IEC 60794-1-2 and IEC 60794-2.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 60794-2-40:2008 is an international standard developed by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) that specifies the family specifications for indoor optical fibre cables using A4 fibres. This standard covers both buffered and cabled A4 multimode optical fibres designed specifically for indoor use, ensuring reliable performance and safety within building environments. As a technical revision of the 2003 edition, this document introduces comprehensive requirements regarding cable construction, testing, and performance, supporting cables designed for a minimum operational lifetime of 15 years.
The IEC 60794 series addresses optical fibre cables, and this part focuses on indoor cable variants, emphasizing safety, mechanical robustness, and optical performance. It is essential for manufacturers, suppliers, and users involved in deploying optical fibre infrastructure inside buildings, including telecommunications and data networks.
Key Topics
-
Scope and Applications
Specifies indoor use of buffered and cabled A4 multimode fibres as per IEC 60793-2-40, detailing construction and performance standards to align with customer requirements for attenuation, safety, and durability. -
Cable Construction
- Use of multimode A4 optical fibres with specific geometry and attenuation standards.
- Buffers comprising inert materials that are removable within defined lengths to facilitate easy fibre access.
- Provisions for strength and anti-buckling members to ensure mechanical stability.
- Cable marking and identification for traceability throughout the length.
- Restrictions on fiber splicing within cable deliveries unless specifically agreed.
-
Dimensions and Markings
Standardized measurements for fibre diameter, buffer, sheath thickness, and overall cable dimensions validated by referenced IEC testing methods. -
Testing and Compliance
- Mechanical tests include tensile performance, crush resistance, impact strength, bending, repeated bending, flexing, torsion, and kink resistance.
- Environmental tests on the complete cable assess performance under temperature variations, humidity, and other indoor conditions.
- Transmission performance requirements enforce minimal signal attenuation aligned with IEC 60793-2-40.
- Fire performance tests comply with IEC/TR 62222 recommendations, ensuring cables meet fire safety regulations applicable to indoor installations.
-
Safety and Health Considerations
Materials selected for cable construction must not present health hazards during intended use, highlighting compliance with safety standards for indoor environments.
Applications
IEC 60794-2-40:2008 primarily serves the telecommunications and data communication sectors where high-performance indoor optical fibre cabling is critical. Specific applications include:
- Structured cabling systems for enterprise and commercial buildings
- Data centers requiring reliable multimode fibre connections
- Indoor network backbones for telecommunications providers
- Installation in sensitive environments where fire performance and safety are crucial, such as hospitals and schools
- Environments demanding long-lasting cable solutions with predictable attenuation and mechanical robustness
By standardizing these family specifications for A4 fibre cables, IEC 60794-2-40 enables manufacturers and users to ensure interoperability, quality assurance, and regulatory compliance for indoor fibre optic cabling systems.
