IEC 60794-3-12:2012 is a detailed specification for duct and directly buried optical telecommunication cables for use in premises cabling to ensure compatibility with ISO/IEC 11801 and ISO/IEC 24702. Those standards have requirements to ensure that models work for generic cabling and system performances. Values in this standard support these models. This second edition cancels and replaces the first edition published in 2005. This edition constitutes a technical revision. This edition includes the following significant technical changes with respect to the previous edition: - reference to ISO/IEC 24702; - reference to Fibre B6 (IEC 60793-2-50); - reference to Fibre A1a.3 (IEC 60793-2-10); - reference to the OS2 Fibre as defined by ISO/IEC 11801; - reference to the OM4 Fibre as defined by ISO/IEC 11801. Keywords: buried optical telecommunication cables, ISO/IEC 11801 and ISO/IEC 24702 This publication is to be read in conjunction with IEC 60794-1-1:2011, IEC 60794-1-2:2003 and IEC 60794-3-10:2009.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 60794-3-12:2012 is an international standard providing a detailed specification for outdoor optical fibre cables designed for duct installation and direct burial. These cables are intended for premises cabling applications and ensure compatibility with broader generic cabling standards such as ISO/IEC 11801 and ISO/IEC 24702. The standard supports these models by specifying performance values crucial for achieving generic cabling and system performance goals.
This revision supersedes the first edition published in 2005, introducing key technical updates including references to updated fibre categories and performance classifications aligned with ISO/IEC cabling standards. It is essential for manufacturers, system designers, and installers involved in telecommunications infrastructure requiring robust, reliable optical fibre cables suitable for outdoor deployment yet integrated within premises cabling systems.
Key Topics
-
Scope and Purpose
IEC 60794-3-12 primarily governs duct and directly buried outdoor optical fibre telecommunication cables for use inside premises. It ensures defined technical compatibility with ISO/IEC 11801 and ISO/IEC 24702, which target generic cabling and industrial premises cabling respectively. -
Compatibility with Fibre Types
The standard references specific fibre categories and sub-categories, including:- Single-mode fibres: B1.1, B1.3 (IEC 60793-2-50), B6 a1, B6 a2 sub-categories
- Multimode fibres: A1a, A1b, A1a.2, and A1a.3 models (IEC 60793-2-10)
Performance codes such as OS1, OS2, OM1, OM2, OM3, and OM4 correspond to these fibre types to ensure consistent transmission performance.
-
Transmission Requirements
Optical attenuation and bandwidth performance requirements are specified with maximum allowable attenuation coefficients at key wavelengths for both multimode and single-mode fibres, ensuring signal integrity for telecom applications. Tables in the standard define:- Multimode cable attenuation limits (e.g., ≤3.5 dB/km at 850 nm)
- Single-mode cable attenuation limits (e.g., ≤1.0 dB/km at 1310 and 1550 nm)
- Minimum multimode fibre bandwidth in MHz × km to support high-speed data transmission.
-
Mechanical, Environmental, and Chemical (MICE) Characteristics
While IEC 60794-3-12 outlines core cable requirements, additional environmental robustness tests related to mechanical stress, ingress protection, climate resilience, chemical resistance, and electromagnetic interference may be specified according to ISO/IEC 24702. MICE testing ensures cable suitability under the varied conditions found in industrial premises and outdoor environments. -
References and Integration
This standard is intended to be used alongside IEC 60794-1-1, IEC 60794-1-2, and IEC 60794-3-10, which cover generic family and sectional specifications for optical fibre cables. It also incorporates references to normative documents covering fibre product specifications and testing procedures.
Applications
IEC 60794-3-12:2012 is especially valuable for:
- Designing and installing duct and directly buried optical fibre cables within commercial, industrial, and institutional premises.
- Telecom and data network infrastructure requiring outdoor-rated cables integrated into indoor cabling systems.
- Ensuring optical cable systems comply with international generic cabling standards for performance, interoperability, and reliability.
- Supporting high-bandwidth data communications, including LAN, WAN, and industrial automation networks deployed in outdoor and underground environments leading into buildings.
- Suppliers and manufacturers aiming to certify cables according to internationally recognized requirements for premises cabling involving outdoor conditions.
