IEC 60794-3-21:2015 is a product specification. It presents the detailed requirements specific to optical self-supporting aerial telecommunication cables for use in premises cabling to ensure compatibility with ISO/IEC 11801 and ISO/IEC 24702. The requirements of the family specification IEC 60794-3-20 and sectional specification IEC 60794-3 are applicable to cables covered by this standard. This second edition cancels and replaces the first edition published in 2005. This edition constitutes a technical revision. This edition includes the following significant technical changes with respect to the previous edition: - reference to ISO 24702; - reference to Fibre B6 (IEC 60793-2-50); - reference to the OS2 Fibre as defined by ISO/IEC 11801. Keywords: optical self-supporting aerial telecommunication cables This publication is to be read in conjunction with IEC 60794-1-1:2015, IEC 60794-1-2:2013, IEC 60794-3:2014 and IEC 60794-3-20:2009.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 60794-3-21:2015 specifies the required characteristics and performance parameters for optical self-supporting aerial telecommunication cables designed for outdoor use in premises cabling. This standard, published by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), ensures compatibility with major structured cabling standards, including ISO/IEC 11801 and ISO/IEC 24702, making it crucial for network designers and manufacturers aiming for global compliance and high reliability in telecommunication infrastructure.
The target cables are self-supporting aerial fibre optic cables, often deployed between buildings or across open spaces in industrial, commercial, or campus environments. These cables are engineered to withstand outdoor conditions while ensuring reliable high-speed data transmission required for modern premises networks.
Key Topics
-
Compatibility and Compliance:
Ensures optical aerial cables comply with ISO/IEC 11801 (generic cabling for customer premises) and ISO/IEC 24702 (industrial cabling). -
Cable Structure and Performance:
Outlines physical, mechanical, and optical requirements for cable design, including attenuation, bandwidth, temperature cycling, and polarization mode dispersion (PMD). -
Fibre Types and Classification:
Details acceptable fibre categories, such as single-mode (OS1, OS2) and multimode fibres (OM1, OM2, OM3, OM4), referencing IEC 60793-2-10 and IEC 60793-2-50. -
Environmental Durability:
Specifies environmental testing, such as temperature cycling from -40°C to +70°C, to confirm robust performance under varied climatic conditions. -
Interoperability:
Emphasizes product specification alignment with broader family and sectional standards (IEC 60794-3-20 and IEC 60794-3), facilitating system integration and consistent product quality.
Applications
IEC 60794-3-21:2015 is widely applicable to various scenarios in telecommunication infrastructure, including:
-
Outdoor-to-Indoor Transitions:
Facilitates high-performance fibre optic links crossing between buildings or dispersed facilities within a campus. -
Industrial Premises:
Provides robust cabling suitable for harsh environments encountered in factories, plants, and refineries where aerial solutions are optimal. -
Commercial Complexes and Campuses:
Supports backbone and horizontal cabling in business parks, medical complexes, and educational institutions, ensuring structured network expansion. -
Municipal and Utility Networks:
Suitable for utility providers deploying fibre for networked services (e.g., smart grids or infrastructure monitoring) that require reliable aerial deployment. -
Upgrade and Expansion Projects:
Enables seamless addition of new aerial fibre runs that interoperate with existing structured cabling architectures in compliance with global standards.
Related Standards
