IEC 60811-409:2012 gives the procedure for measuring the loss of mass which normally applies to PVC insulations and sheaths. IEC 60811-409:2012 cancels and replaces Clause 8 of IEC 60811-3-2:1985, which is withdrawn. Full details of the replacements are shown in Annex A of IEC 60811-100:2012. There are no specific technical changes with respect to the previous edition, but see the Foreword to IEC 60811-100:2012. This publication is to be read in conjunction with IEC 60811-100:2012.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 60811-409:2012 is an international standard published by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) that specifies a test method for measuring the loss of mass in thermoplastic insulations and sheaths used in electric and optical fibre cables. This part of IEC 60811 focuses particularly on the loss of mass test commonly applied to polyvinyl chloride (PVC) materials, essential for evaluating material stability and durability under thermal stress. It replaces Clause 8 of IEC 60811-3-2:1985, aligning with updates in IEC 60811-100:2012 without technical changes from the previous edition.
This standard supports manufacturers, testers, and quality assurance professionals in the cable industry to ensure material performance and compliance with international specifications.
Key Topics
- Loss of Mass Test Procedure: Defines a standardized method to determine the thermal stability of non-metallic thermoplastic cable insulations and sheaths by measuring mass loss during controlled heating.
- Material Scope: Primarily applies to PVC-based insulations and sheaths but can be referenced for similar thermoplastic materials.
- Test Conditions: Details on temperature settings, heating duration, and sample preparation essential to ensure reliable and repeatable results.
- Reference to IEC 60811-100:2012: Emphasizes reading in conjunction for comprehensive test methods and annexes covering detailed procedural elements.
- Replacement of Previous Clause: Cancels and replaces outdated Clause 8 from IEC 60811-3-2:1985, maintaining continuity in test methodology.
Applications
- Quality Control in Cable Manufacturing: Ensures thermoplastic materials used for insulation and sheathing maintain integrity and meet safety requirements.
- Material Stability Assessment: Determines thermal resistance and degradation characteristics critical for electric and optical fibre cable longevity.
- Compliance and Certification Testing: Supports manufacturers in adhering to international standards for product approval and market acceptance.
- Research and Development: Facilitates evaluation of new materials or formulations under standard testing conditions to optimize performance.
- Failure Analysis: Helps identify causes related to material mass loss in thermal environments impacting cable reliability.
Related Standards
- IEC 60811 Series: Comprehensive test methods for non-metallic materials used in electric and optical fibre cables, including physical, chemical, and mechanical tests.
- IEC 60811-3-2:1985: The previous version containing the replaced clause for loss of mass tests.
- IEC 60811-100:2012: General introduction and guidance for the application of test methods in the IEC 60811 series.
- IEC 60068-2: Environmental testing standards related to durability and thermal effects on electronic and cable materials.
- PVC Material Standards: Complementary standards defining requirements for PVC materials in electrical insulation applications.
By following IEC 60811-409:2012, stakeholders in the cable industry can reliably assess and ensure the thermal stability of thermoplastic materials, contributing to safer, more durable, and compliant electric and optical fibre cables. This makes it an essential reference for testing laboratories, manufacturers, and certification bodies involved in the production and validation of cable components.
