IEC 60811-512:2012 describes the procedure for testing tensile strength and elongation at break after conditioning at elevated temperature. It is specific to polyethylene and polypropylene compounds. This test is intended for samples from filled cables, of polyolefin insulations with a wall thickness of more than 0,8 mm and for polyolefin sheaths in direct contact with filling compound. IEC 60811-512:2012 cancels and replaces Clause 8 of IEC 60811-4-2:2004, which is withdrawn. Full details of the replacements are shown in Annex A of IEC 60811-100:2012. There are no specific technical changes with respect to the previous edition, but see the Foreword to IEC 60811-100:2012. This publication is to be read in conjunction with IEC 60811-100:2012.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 60811-512:2012 is an international standard published by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), focusing on mechanical test methods for non-metallic materials used in electric and optical fibre cables. Specifically, Part 512 deals with tensile strength and elongation at break testing after conditioning polyethylene and polypropylene compounds at elevated temperatures. This standard is crucial for assessing the durability and mechanical properties of polyolefin insulations and sheaths in filled cables, ensuring compliance with industry quality and safety requirements.
IEC 60811-512:2012 supersedes Clause 8 of IEC 60811-4-2:2004 and aligns with the general framework of the IEC 60811 series for testing non-metallic cable materials. It is intended to be used alongside IEC 60811-100:2012 for correct application.
Key Topics
-
Scope: This test method applies exclusively to polyolefin materials – polyethylene and polypropylene compounds – used as insulation or sheathing in electric and optical fibre cables, particularly those with wall thickness above 0.8 mm and in direct contact with filling compounds.
-
Conditioning Procedure: Samples are conditioned by exposure to elevated temperature in air for 7 days (7 × 24 hours) at temperatures based on the nominal drop point of the filling compound:
- At 60 ± 2°C if the drop point is between 50°C and 70°C.
- At 70 ± 2°C if the drop point exceeds 70°C.
-
Testing Methods: After conditioning, tensile strength and elongation at break tests are performed according to IEC 60811-501 without further ageing treatments. The median value from multiple tests reflects the material’s mechanical properties post-conditioning.
-
Test Reporting: Results and procedures must be documented as prescribed in IEC 60811-100 to ensure standardized reporting and interpretation across applications.
-
Normative References: IEC 60811-100 and IEC 60811-501 are referenced documents essential for accurate implementation of this test method.
Applications
IEC 60811-512:2012 is widely utilized in the manufacture and quality control of electric and optical fibre cables for:
- Verifying mechanical integrity and performance of cable insulations and sheaths made from polyethylene and polypropylene after thermal exposure.
- Ensuring reliability under elevated temperature conditions simulating operational or environmental stress.
- Supporting product development and compliance testing for filled cables, such as energy cables, communication cables, optical fibre cables, and specialized cables for ship or offshore use.
- Helping manufacturers optimize cable compound formulations to meet international standards and guarantee long-term stability.
- Enabling national and international harmonization of cable testing methods for polyethylene and polypropylene compounds.
