IEC 60811-605:2012 describes the test methods for measuring the content of carbon black added for UV stabilization of polyethylene and polyolefin compounds. These methods are not suitable for halogenated compounds. Method A is suitable only for polyethylene and polypropylene compounds. Method B is suitable for polyolefine compounds. IEC 60811-605:2012 cancels and replaces Clauses 11 and 12 of IEC 60811-4-1:2004, which is withdrawn. Full details of the replacements are shown in Annex A of IEC 60811-100:2012. There are no specific technical changes with respect to the previous edition, but see the foreword to IEC 60811-100:2012. This publication is to be read in conjunction with IEC 60811-100:2012.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 60811-605:2012 is an international standard published by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) that specifies test methods for measuring the content of carbon black and mineral fillers in polyethylene and polyolefin compounds used in the manufacture of electric and optical fibre cables. Carbon black is commonly added to these compounds to enhance UV stabilization, while mineral fillers improve material properties. This standard defines two primary physical test methods designed for non-metallic cable materials, ensuring consistent product quality, performance, and durability.
Key Topics
-
Scope and Applicability
IEC 60811-605:2012 applies to the measurement of carbon black and/or mineral filler content specifically in polyethylene and polyolefin compounds used in cable sheaths and insulation. The standard excludes halogenated compounds.- Method A: Suitable exclusively for polyethylene and polypropylene compounds.
- Method B: Suitable for broader polyolefin compounds.
-
Method A – Direct Combustion
Involves sample preparation by cutting cable sheath material and weighing. The sample undergoes controlled combustion in a furnace with a nitrogen atmosphere to remove the polymer matrix, followed by combustion in air or oxygen to burn remaining carbon black. The weight changes before and after combustion enable calculation of carbon black and mineral filler percentages. -
Method B – Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA)
This method heats a weighed sample in a thermogravimetric analyzer under controlled temperature and atmospheric conditions (nitrogen followed by synthetic air). TGA measures weight changes as temperature increases to determine carbon black content. This method applies to polyolefin compounds and can serve as an alternative to the direct combustion method. -
Precision and Reporting
Both methods require careful weighing to 0.0001 g accuracy and detailed procedural controls for temperature ramping, gas flow, and sample handling. The test report must include method details, sample description, test conditions, and calculated filler contents.
Applications
IEC 60811-605:2012 is essential for manufacturers, quality control laboratories, and testing agencies involved with electrical and optical fibre cable production. Key applications include:
-
Quality Assurance
Accurate measurement of carbon black and mineral filler content helps verify that cable materials meet design specifications, especially for UV resistance and mechanical performance. -
Material Characterization
Enables characterization of non-metallic components such as sheath and insulation layers to ensure consistent physical properties across cable batches. -
Compliance and Standardization
Assists manufacturers in complying with international cable standards by providing standardized test methods referenced in cable material specifications. -
Research and Development
Supports development of new cable compounds by providing reliable measurement techniques for filler content optimization.
