IEC 60831-2:2014 applies to capacitors according to IEC 60831-1 and gives the requirements for the ageing test, self-healing test and destruction test for these capacitors. This third edition cancels and replaces the second edition published in 1995. This edition constitutes a technical revision. This edition includes the following significant technical changes with respect to the previous edition: - Updating of the normative references; - Discharge cycles before ageing test carried out at ambient temperature; - Alternative Self-healing test at d.c. voltage; - Modified acceptance conditions after Self-healing test; - Modifications to Destruction test. IEC 60831-2:2014 is an international standard published by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) that specifically addresses shunt power capacitors of the self-healing type designed for alternating current (a.c.) systems with a rated voltage up to and including 1,000 V. This part 2 of the IEC 60831 series focuses on the essential ageing test, self-healing test, and destruction test requirements for these capacitors. The standard ensures reliability and performance consistency essential for various power system applications.
This is the third edition, replacing the second edition from 1995, introducing significant technical revisions such as updated normative references, new discharge cycles before the ageing test, an alternative self-healing test at d.c. voltage, modified acceptance conditions after the self-healing test, and changes to the destruction test.

Ageing Test
This test evaluates the durability and longevity of the capacitor under rated stress conditions. It includes three sequential phases:- Energizing the capacitor at 1.25 times its rated voltage for 750 hours at the rated temperature.
- Applying 1,000 discharge cycles with specified d.c. voltage and inductive load to simulate frequent switching conditions.
- Repeating the initial voltage application phase.
