IEC 60884-2-3:2025 applies to switched socket-outlets without interlock, for fixed installation, for AC only, with or without earthing contact, with a rated voltage not exceeding 440 V and a rated current not exceeding 32 A, intended for household and similar purposes, either indoors or outdoors. This document applies to socket-outlets controlled by a manually operated mechanical switch. This third edition cancels and replaces the second edition published in 2006. This edition constitutes a technical revision. This edition includes the following significant technical changes with respect to the previous edition: a) alignment to IEC 60884-1, fourth edition.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 60884-2-3:2025 is an international standard published by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) that specifies requirements for switched socket-outlets without interlock for fixed installations, designed for household and similar purposes. This third edition updates and replaces the previous version, aligning with IEC 60884-1 (fourth edition), reflecting the latest safety, construction, and performance requirements. The standard applies to AC switched socket-outlets, with or without earthing contact, rated up to 440 V and 32 A, suitable for both indoor and outdoor use.
This document is particularly relevant for product designers, manufacturers, testing laboratories, regulatory bodies, and installers dealing with electrical accessories and fixed wiring devices. The requirements target socket-outlets controlled by a manually operated mechanical switch, ensuring electrical safety and reliable operation under typical household and comparable settings.
Key Topics
-
Scope and Classification
- Covers fixed installation switched socket-outlets without an interlock.
- Applies to AC-only systems up to 440 V, 32 A.
- Socket-outlets may include earthing contact or not, for indoor/outdoor use.
- Categories based on switching method (rotary, tumbler, rocker, push-button, cord-operated) and neutral switching.
-
Marking and Identification
- Specifies clear marking on terminals (e.g., L, L1, L2) and positions of switches (ON, OFF).
- Requires visible indication of switch position on accessible parts.
- Mandates that identification should not be made on removable parts like screws.
-
Safety and Construction Requirements
- Insulating material for operating parts unless metal parts are fully insulated or earthed.
- Metal switch mechanisms should not be accessible when installed.
- Each socket-outlet in a multiple unit must have its own switch.
- Construction prevents undue arcing, ensures correct operation, and prohibits intermediate contact positions unless safe.
- Switches must withstand mechanical and electrical stresses of normal operation and resist sustained arcing.
-
Testing and Performance
- Mandates rigorous testing for insulation resistance, dielectric strength, temperature rise, breaking capacity, and mechanical strength.
- Specifies minimum creepage distances and clearances.
- Requirements outlined for normal operations and breaking under load.
Applications
IEC 60884-2-3:2025 is essential for manufacturers and certifying bodies involved in the production and approval of switched socket-outlets for permanent installations. Its use ensures products:
- Meet international safety and performance benchmarks in residential and similar environments.
- Protect users from electric shock and unintended arcing.
- Enable regulatory compliance for electrical installations in both indoor and outdoor settings.
- Provide clear operation and identification for end-users, reducing operational hazards.
Typical applications include:
- Residential and commercial buildings
- Schools, hotels, healthcare, and hospitality settings
- Public spaces and shared facilities
- Refurbishments and upgrades of fixed electrical infrastructures
