This part of IEC 60896 is applicable to lead-acid cells and batteries which are designed for service in fixed locations (i.e. not habitually to be moved from place to place) and which are permanently connected to the load and to the d.c. power supply. Batteries operating in such applications are called "stationary batteries". Any type or construction of lead-acid battery may be used for stationary battery applications. This part 11 of the standard is applicable to vented types only. This first edition of IEC 60896-11 cancels and replaces IEC 60896-1 (first edition) published in 1987 and its amendments 1 (1988) and 2 (1990), and constitutes a technical revision.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 60896-11:2002 specifies general requirements and methods of test for stationary, vented lead‑acid batteries (cells and batteries intended for fixed installations and permanently connected to DC supply). This first edition (2002) replaces earlier IEC 60896‑1 material and provides standardized definitions, performance criteria and test procedures for capacity, endurance, floating operation, charge retention, mechanical strength, electrolyte management and related measurements.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope: Applies only to vented types used in fixed locations (stationary batteries).
- Definitions: Includes key terms such as electrolyte reserve, rated capacity (Crt) and nominal capacity (Cnom).
- Mechanical strength: Design must withstand normal handling and transport; seismic requirements to be specified if needed.
- Electrolyte control: Minimum and maximum level indicators required; reserve volume governs inspection frequency.
- Capacity testing (Clause 14): Multiple discharge durations (t = 240 h, 20 h, 10 h, 8 h, 5 h, 3 h, 2 h, 1 h, 0.5 h) are recommended. For common 10–3 h rates, end‑of‑discharge voltage is 1.80 V per cell (unless otherwise specified). Rated capacity is declared by the manufacturer.
- Floating operation (Clause 15): Tests verify suitability for continuous float charging; checks include electrolyte density, individual cell voltages and capacity retention after 6 months.
- Endurance tests (Clauses 16–17):
- Cycle endurance: minimum of 100 cycles (two sets of 50) before capacity falls below 0.95 · C10 (manufacturer may state other cycle criteria).
- Overcharge endurance: typically six periods of 720 h before capacity drops below 0.8 · C1.
- Charge retention (Clause 18) and short‑circuit/internal resistance measurement (Clause 19) are defined with test procedures.
- Marking and documentation (Clauses 21–24): Requirements for labeling and information on cells/monoblocs and battery room recommendations.
Applications and who uses this standard
IEC 60896-11 is used by:
- Battery manufacturers for product design, type qualification and performance claims.
- Test laboratories for verifying capacity, endurance, float performance and safety criteria.
- System designers / integrators (telecoms, UPS, power utilities, substations, emergency power systems) to select appropriate vented stationary lead‑acid batteries.
- Facility managers / procurement teams for specification and acceptance testing of stationary battery installations.
Practical benefits: ensures consistent performance data, defines maintenance inspection intervals (via electrolyte reserve), and helps specify batteries for long‑term float service and applications with frequent cycling or risk of overcharge.
