IEC 60909-0:2016 is applicable to the calculation of short-circuit currents in low-voltage three-phase AC systems, and in high-voltage three-phase AC systems, operating at a nominal frequency of 50 Hz or 60 Hz. It establishes a general, practicable and concise procedure leading to results which are generally of acceptable accuracy and deals with the calculation of short-circuit currents in the case of balanced or unbalanced short circuits. This second edition cancels and replaces the first edition published in 2001. This edition constitutes a technical revision. This edition includes the following significant technical changes with respect to the previous edition: - contribution of windpower station units to the short-circuit current; - contribution of power station units with ful size converters to the short-circuit current; - new document structure. This publication is to be read in conjunction with IEC TR 60909-1:2002, IEC TR 60909-2:2008, IEC 60909-3:2009 and IEC TR 60909-4:2000.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 60909-0:2016 is an international standard published by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) that provides a comprehensive, practical methodology for calculating short-circuit currents in three-phase alternating current (AC) electrical systems. Applicable to both low-voltage and high-voltage AC networks operating at nominal frequencies of 50 Hz or 60 Hz, this standard enables electrical engineers to estimate short-circuit currents accurately, ensuring system safety and reliability.
This second edition updates and replaces the original 2001 release, incorporating significant technical advances such as the inclusion of contributions from wind power generation units and power station units with full-size converters. The standard is part of the IEC 60909 series and is intended to be used alongside related technical reports and parts for a complete understanding of short-circuit current calculations.
Key Topics
-
Calculation methods for short-circuit currents
The standard provides a general, clear procedure to calculate initial, peak, symmetrical breaking, and steady-state short-circuit currents, covering balanced and unbalanced faults. It defines calculation assumptions, equivalent voltage source models, and symmetrical component analysis techniques. -
Short-circuit impedances of electrical equipment
It details the characterization of network feeders, transformers (two and three-winding), overhead lines, cables, reactors, synchronous and asynchronous machines, power station units, wind power units, and static converter-fed drives. This includes how to integrate their impedances into the calculation process. -
Special considerations for modern power sources
Contributions of wind power station units with asynchronous and doubly fed asynchronous generators, as well as power units equipped with full-size converters, are explicitly accounted for, reflecting contemporary grid integration challenges. -
Calculation of key short-circuit current parameters
The standard elaborates methods to calculate:- Initial symmetrical short-circuit current (key for protective device settings)
- Peak short-circuit current (important for mechanical stress assessments)
- Symmetrical breaking current (used for circuit breaker specifications)
- DC components affecting current decay and protection coordination
-
Thermal effects assessments
It includes the calculation of thermal equivalent short-circuit currents and the Joule integral, helping engineers assess the thermal impact of short-circuits on equipment.
Applications
IEC 60909-0:2016 is essential in the design, planning, and operation of electrical power systems, offering practical guidance to:
- Power system engineers for accurate evaluation and analysis of fault current levels to ensure correct sizing and coordination of protective devices such as circuit breakers and fuses.
- Grid operators and planners to assess system robustness, fault impact, and equipment ratings in both conventional and renewable-integrated power systems.
- Manufacturers and testing laboratories to verify equipment short-circuit withstand capabilities according to standardized evaluation methodologies.
- Consultants and safety auditors to conduct risk assessments related to electrical faults and ensure compliance with international safety and operational standards.
- Wind power and renewable integration specialists responding to the evolving challenges posed by distributed generation and converter-based power sources impacting fault current profiles.
