Overview
IEC 60966-1:2019 - "Radio frequency and coaxial cable assemblies - Part 1: Generic specification - General requirements and test methods" - is the third edition of the generic IEC specification for RF coaxial cable assemblies that operate in the transverse electromagnetic (TEM) mode. It defines general requirements and standardized test methods for the electrical, mechanical and environmental performance of coaxial cable assemblies made from cables and connectors. Sectional specifications (other parts of IEC 60966) provide additional requirements for specific families of cable assemblies.
Key editorial changes in this 2019 edition include cancellation of the internal measurement method for screening effectiveness and the addition of references to accepted procedures for transfer impedance and screening attenuation testing.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Design and manufacturing: requirements for cable and connector construction, interface and outline dimensions, and workmanship.
- Marking, packaging and quality management: labeling, end caps, packaging and supplier quality processes.
- Electrical tests: reflection properties (VSWR/return loss), uniformity of impedance, insertion loss, propagation time and stability of electrical length, phase characteristics, screening effectiveness (transfer impedance and screening attenuation referenced), insulation resistance, continuity and power rating, intermodulation.
- Mechanical robustness tests: tensile, flexure, flexing endurance, crushing, torque, multiple bending, abrasion, vibration, shock, impact and mechanical endurance tests.
- Environmental tests: climatic sequence, damp heat, rapid temperature change, vibration/bumps and shock, with recommended severities and procedures.
- General test methods: standard atmospheric conditions, visual and dimensional inspections, and test-reporting requirements.
Note: IEC 60966-1 provides test method descriptions and the information that detail specifications must supply; it does not prescribe application-specific numeric limits in every case - those are set in sectional or product detail specifications.
Practical applications and who uses this standard
- Manufacturers of RF coaxial cable assemblies use IEC 60966-1 for product design validation, production testing and supplier quality control.
- Test laboratories and compliance labs adopt the standardized test methods for repeatable electrical, mechanical and environmental qualification.
- Procurement and qualification engineers in telecoms, broadcast, aerospace, defence, automotive and instrumentation rely on this standard for clear acceptance criteria and contract specifications.
- EMC and RF system engineers reference the standard for ensuring impedance stability, low insertion loss and adequate screening (EMI) performance in sensitive RF links.
