IEC 60966-2-6:2016 is a detail specification which applies to coaxial cables described in the IEC 61196 series. It relates to cable assemblies for radio and TV receivers, and in particular to the cable assemblies subfamily F (see IEC 61169-24). These cable assemblies are used as described in IEC 60728-4. This part of IEC 60966 gives subfamily requirements and severities which shall be applied. This edition includes the following significant technical changes with respect to the previous edition: a) the return loss requirements and the insertion loss requirements are matched to the relevant cables, b) screening effectiveness shall be measured according to IEC 62153-4-7, triaxial method, c) screening class A+ was introduced. This publication is to be read in conjunction with IEC 60966-1:1999, IEC 60966-2-1:2008 and IEC 60966-2-2:2003
Abstract
Overview
IEC 60966-2-6:2016 is an international standard published by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) that specifies detailed requirements for coaxial cable assemblies used in radio and TV receivers. Covering the frequency range from 0 MHz to 3,000 MHz, this standard applies specifically to cable assemblies of subfamily F, featuring IEC 61169-24 connectors. It complements generic and sectional specifications defined in IEC 60966-1:1999, IEC 60966-2-1:2008, and IEC 60966-2-2:2003, ensuring interoperability and high performance in coaxial cable assemblies for broadcast reception.
This fourth edition introduces critical updates including refined return loss and insertion loss requirements tailored to cable characteristics, updated screening effectiveness testing using the triaxial method (IEC 62153-4-7), and the introduction of a new screening class, A+, which denotes superior shielding performance.
Key Topics
-
Frequency Range and Application:
The standard covers coaxial cable assemblies for operation between 0 MHz and 3,000 MHz, primarily targeting radio and television receiver systems. -
Cable and Connector Types:
It specifies cable assemblies based on IEC 61196 series coaxial cables and uses IEC 61169-24 type F connectors known for 75 Ω characteristic impedance, suited for broadcast signal transmission. -
Electrical Performance Requirements:
- Return Loss: Minimum return loss values of >20 dB (5 MHz to 1000 MHz), >18 dB (1000 MHz to 2000 MHz), and >15 dB (2000 MHz to 3000 MHz), indicating effective signal reflection reduction.
- Insertion Loss: Defined with a maximum permissible insertion loss of less than twice 0.0001 times frequency (f in MHz) plus 0.4 dB/m, ensuring minimal signal attenuation.
- Screening Effectiveness: Measured using IEC 62153-4-7 triaxial method. Class A assemblies exhibit transfer impedance below 5 mΩ/m and screening attenuation above 85 dB from 30 MHz to 1,000 MHz, while the newly introduced Class A+ offers enhanced shielding with transfer impedance under 2.5 mΩ/m and attenuation exceeding 95 dB in the same range.
-
Mechanical and Environmental Criteria:
Includes tests for tensile strength (>45 N), flexure endurance (>50 cycles), flexing endurance (minimum 20 cycles), and cable assembly crushing resistance (>700 N), ensuring durability under typical use and handling. Climatic category is specified as 40/70/21 (temperature range and humidity conditions). -
Marking and Identification:
Assemblies must be suitably marked on the sheath or jacket showing the IEC assembly type and screening class for easy identification and quality assurance.
Applications
IEC 60966-2-6:2016 standard is critical for manufacturers, testers, and users of coaxial cable assemblies in radio and television broadcasting reception setups. Typical applications include:
- Broadcast Signal Distribution: Reliable coaxial cable assemblies in antenna connections, CATV systems, and integrated broadcast networks.
- Consumer Electronics: Ensuring consistent performance for coaxial cables in residential and commercial radio/TV receivers.
- Testing and Certification: Providing benchmarks for conformity assessment, quality control, and product qualification in line with international best practices.
- Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC): Using specified screening classes to mitigate electromagnetic interference, critical for maintaining signal integrity in dense RF environments.
Related Standards
For comprehensive understanding and compliance, IEC 60966-2-6:2016 is designed to be used alongside several related IEC standards, including:
- IEC 60966-1:1999 – Generic specification covering general requirements and test methods for radio frequency and coaxial cable assemblies.
- IEC 60966-2-1:2008 and IEC 60966-2-2:2003 – Sectional and blank detail specifications for flexible coaxial cable assemblies.
- IEC 61169-24 – Defines sectional specifications for radio frequency coaxial connectors with screw coupling (type F connectors), integral to assembly design.
- IEC 60728-4 – Addresses passive wideband equipment for coaxial cable networks, providing application context.
- IEC 62153-4-7 – Outlines test methods for screening effectiveness and transfer impedance in metallic communication cables, essential for evaluating EMC performance.
By adhering to IEC 60966-2-6:2016, stakeholders ensure high-quality coaxial cable assemblies optimally designed for radio frequency applications with guaranteed electrical, mechanical, and environmental performance across demanding broadcast and consumer environments. This promotes interoperability, reduces signal loss and interference, and supports reliable media reception worldwide.
