IEC 62153-4-7:2021 deals with the triaxial tube in tube method. This triaxial method is suitable to determine the surface transfer impedance and/or screening attenuation and coupling attenuation of mated screened connectors (including the connection between cable and connector) and cable assemblies. This method could also be extended to determine the transfer impedance, coupling or screening attenuation of balanced or multipin connectors and multicore cable assemblies. This third edition cancels and replaces the second edition published in 2015 and its Amendment 1:2018.This edition includes the following significant technical changes with respect to the previous edition: - Annex E contains informative information about the direct measurement of screening effectiveness of connectors; - Annex F gives normative information about mixed mode parameters; - Annex G contains normative information about accessories for measuring coupling attenuation; - Annex H discusses the low frequency screening attenuation.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 62153-4-7:2021 is an international standard developed by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) for testing metallic cables and other passive components. It specifies the triaxial tube in tube method for evaluating the electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) of connectors and cable assemblies. The standard focuses on measuring transfer impedance (ZT), screening attenuation (aS), and coupling attenuation (aC)-all critical parameters for ensuring effective shielding and minimizing electromagnetic interference (EMI) in communication and signal transmission systems.
This third edition, which replaces the previous edition and its amendments, incorporates new technical updates, including expanded guidance on measurement procedures, direct measurement methods, and testing at low frequencies, as well as the use of mixed mode parameters and accessories.
Key Topics
- Transfer Impedance (ZT): Defines the efficiency of a connector or assembly in limiting voltage transfer due to current across its shield. Expressed in ohms or decibels, this measurement is vital for short components where EMI performance is critical.
- Screening Attenuation (aS): Represents the shield’s ability to reduce electromagnetic signals passing through it, especially for electrically “long” devices.
- Coupling Attenuation (aC): Describes the sum effect of unbalance attenuation and screening attenuation for balanced devices, suitable for both individual connectors and whole assemblies.
- Triaxial Tube in Tube Testing: Utilizes concentric tubes to create shielded measurement conditions, minimizing external electromagnetic influences for accurate testing of short devices such as connectors.
- Low Frequency and Mixed Mode Testing: New annexes expand the method’s frequency range and introduce normative details for mixed mode network analyzers, providing flexibility for various test scenarios.
- Measurement Accessories and Procedures: Includes recommendations and requirements for test setups, adapters, and process calibration to ensure consistent, repeatable results.
Applications
IEC 62153-4-7:2021 serves a wide range of applications demanding high EMC performance and reliable shielding:
- Telecommunications: Ensures cables and connectors meet strict EMI requirements for data centers, infrastructure cabling, and signal distribution.
- Electronics Manufacturing: Guides OEMs and component suppliers in validating the EMC characteristics of cable assemblies and custom interconnects.
- Automotive and Industrial Automation: Applicable wherever screen integrity and interference resistance are crucial, such as for sensor cabling, control systems, and powertrains.
- Broadcast and RF Systems: Supports verification of RF connectors and assemblies in high-frequency applications, including broadcasting, radar, and wireless communications.
- Testing Laboratories: Provides standardized methods for third-party or in-house labs performing EMC compliance and product development testing.
