IEC 62153-4-3:2013(E) determines the screening effectiveness of a cable shield by applying a well-defined current and voltage to the screen of the cable and measuring the induced voltage in order to determine the surface transfer impedance. This test measures only the magnetic component of the transfer impedance. This second edition cancels and replaces the first edition published in 2006. This edition constitutes a technical revision. This edition includes the following significant technical changes with respect to the previous edition: - now three different test configurations are described; - formulas to calculate the maximum frequency up to which the different test configurations can be used are included; - the effect of ground loops is described.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 62153-4-3:2013 is an international standard developed by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) for testing the electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) of metallic communication cables. Specifically, it defines procedures and requirements for measuring the surface transfer impedance of cable shields using the triaxial method. The purpose is to assess the screening effectiveness of cable shields against electromagnetic interference by isolating and quantifying their resistance to magnetic field coupling.
This second edition (including amendment 1:2024) revises the earlier 2006 version with notable improvements:
- Three different test configurations are now included.
- Methods are provided for calculating the maximum usable frequency in each configuration.
- The effects of ground loops on measurement accuracy are addressed.
Key Topics
- Surface Transfer Impedance: Measurement of the magnetic component of transfer impedance which characterizes how well a cable shield prevents interference.
- Triaxial Test Method: Utilizes a triple-layer coaxial setup to apply and measure current and voltage, isolating the cable’s shield performance from other variables.
- Test Configurations:
- Configurations differ in instrument layout and impedance matching, adapting to available equipment (e.g., network analyzers, power splitters, signal generators).
- Sample Preparation: Detailed procedures for preparing and terminating coaxial or symmetrical cable samples to ensure accurate, repeatable results.
- Calibration and Measurement: Emphasizes the importance of calibrated, impedance-matched systems and correction for system losses for reliable EMC test data.
- Frequency Range: Typically suitable up to 30 MHz for 1 m samples and 100 MHz for shorter 0.3 m samples, depending on electrical length.
- Calculation Methods: Provides formulas for determining cut-off frequency and proper interpretation of measured data.
Applications
- Cable Manufacturers: Utilize this standard in R&D and quality control to verify that cable shields meet EMC requirements as dictated by international markets.
- Test Laboratories: Reference IEC 62153-4-3 to carry out accredited conformance and type testing for shielded communication cables.
- System Integrators and Installers: Select cable products with proven EMC performance, backed by standardized surface transfer impedance tests.
- Electrical/Electronic Equipment Designers: Confirm that signal and data cables within sensitive equipment adhere to shielding performance standards, reducing risk of electromagnetic interference.
- Regulatory Compliance: Supports declarations of conformity for EMC directives and other regulatory frameworks in telecommunications and industrial automation.
- Troubleshooting & Performance Assessment: Provides a controlled, repeatable methodology for diagnosing or benchmarking shield efficiency in existing installations.
Related Standards
IEC 62153-4-3 is one part of the broader IEC 62153 series, which addresses different aspects of metallic communication cable test methods. Relevant related standards include:
- IEC 62153-4-1: Introduction to EMC screening measurements for cables.
- IEC 62153-4-2: EMC - Screening and coupling attenuation (Injection clamp method).
- IEC 62153-4-6: Surface transfer impedance measured via line injection.
- IEC 62153-4-8: Capacitive coupling admittance, addressing the electrostatic component not covered by 4-3.
- IEC 62153-4-7: Tube-in-tube method for transfer impedance and screening attenuation.
- IEC 62153-4-9 and 4-12: Additional methods for coupling and screening attenuation in specific cable types or installations.
Practical Value
By following IEC 62153-4-3:2013, organizations ensure consistent, reliable assessment of cable shield effectiveness in real-world conditions. This leads to enhanced electromagnetic compatibility, reduced risk of signal degradation or data errors, and successful compliance with international EMC regulations-critical in today’s interconnected industrial, commercial, and communication environments.
