IEC 60974-2:2013 specifies safety and construction requirements for industrial and professional liquid cooling systems used in arc welding and allied processes to cool torches. This part of IEC 60974 is applicable to stand-alone liquid cooling systems that are either connected to a separate welding power source or built into the welding power source enclosure. This part of IEC 60974 is not applicable to refrigerated cooling systems. This third edition cancels and replaces the first edition published in 2007 and constitutes a technical revision. This edition includes the following significant technical changes with respect to the previous edition: - changes induced by the publication of IEC 60974-1:2012; - addition of a liquid temperature fixed to 65 °C during the heating test in order to allow testing at different ambient air temperature (see 10 d)); - correction factor of cooling power at 40 °C required in instruction manual (see 12.1 o)). This publication is to be read in conjunction with IEC 60974-1:2012.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 60974-2:2013 is an international standard published by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) that specifies the safety and construction requirements for liquid cooling systems used in arc welding equipment. This standard applies to industrial and professional liquid cooling systems designed to cool welding torches. It covers both stand-alone cooling units connected to separate welding power sources and systems integrated within welding power source enclosures.
The 2013 edition is the third revision of this standard, replacing the original 2007 edition. It incorporates technical updates reflecting advances in welding technology and safety, including adaptations consistent with IEC 60974-1:2012. Notably, it introduces fixed testing temperatures for liquid cooling, and requirements for correction factors related to cooling power specifications.
This standard excludes refrigerated cooling systems, focusing solely on liquid systems to ensure optimal thermal management and operator safety during welding operations.
Key Topics
-
Scope and Application
IEC 60974-2:2013 specifically addresses liquid cooling systems for arc welding torches used in industrial and professional settings. It applies to systems that function independently or are built into welding equipment enclosures. -
Safety Requirements
The standard outlines crucial safety provisions to protect against electric shock, including insulation criteria, clearances, creepage distances, dielectric strength, and leakage current limits. It ensures systems safely operate under normal and fault conditions. -
Construction Specifications
Detailed construction requirements cover mechanical provisions such as hose connections, coupling devices, pressure ratings, and cooling liquid overflow protection. These ensure durability and reliability in demanding welding environments. -
Testing Procedures
IEC 60974-2 defines test conditions, conformity assessments, type and routine testing methods. It includes specifications for electrical tests, heating tests at a fixed liquid temperature of 65°C, and the introduction of correction factors for cooling power at 40°C to accommodate varying ambient temperatures. -
Thermal Performance
The standard mandates that liquid cooling systems meet specific thermal requirements, ensuring efficient heat dissipation to prevent torch overheating, extending equipment lifespan and maintaining weld quality. -
Markings and Instructions
Manufacturers must provide clear rating plates, operational instructions, and safety markings. These include information about cooling power, operating pressures, inlet/outlet identifications, and warnings for pressure hazards.
Applications
IEC 60974-2:2013 liquid cooling system standards are essential for manufacturers, suppliers, and users of arc welding equipment who rely on liquid cooling technology to enhance torch performance. The standard ensures:
-
Industrial Welding Operations
Supports continuous high-amperage welding processes requiring effective cooling to maintain torch function and operator safety. -
Professional Welding Settings
Provides guidelines for professional welders who use portable or stationary liquid-cooled torches to improve efficiency and reduce downtime. -
System Integration
Governs both standalone cooling systems and those integrated within power source enclosures, enabling flexibility in equipment design. -
Safety Compliance
Assists manufacturers in meeting international regulatory requirements, facilitating global market acceptance of welding equipment. -
Quality Assurance
Helps ensure that liquid cooling systems operate reliably under various environmental conditions, protecting sensitive welding components from thermal damage.
