This standard applies to connecting devices with insulation piercing clamping units primarily suitable for connecting insulated unprepared conductors. In the connecting operation the insulation of the conductor is pierced, bored through, cut through, removed, displaced or made ineffective in some other manner at the point or points of contact. This Part 2-1 is intended to be used in conjunction with IEC 60998-1. It was established on the basis of the second edition (2002) of that standard. This second edition cancels and replaces the first edition published in 1991 and constitutes a technical revision. The contents of the corrigendum of November 2006 have been included in this copy.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 60998-2-3:2002 is an international standard published by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) that specifies particular requirements for connecting devices with insulation-piercing clamping units. These connecting devices are designed for low-voltage circuits primarily used in household and similar applications. The standard addresses devices that connect insulated, unprepared conductors by piercing, removing, or otherwise effectively bypassing the conductor insulation at the points of contact, ensuring secure and reliable electrical connections.
This part (2-3) of IEC 60998 complements the general requirements established in IEC 60998-1 and reflects a technical revision replacing the first edition from 1991. The 2002 edition incorporates amendments, including corrigenda from 2006, to maintain consistency and enhance safety and performance requirements.
Key Topics
-
Scope and Application
IEC 60998-2-3 covers connecting devices as separate entities featuring insulation-piercing clamping units. The standard focuses on devices suitable for unprepared insulated conductor connections in low-voltage household circuits. -
Construction and Performance Requirements
Detailed requirements include mechanical construction, electrical performance, resistance to aging, moisture, ingress of solids and water, and thermal endurance. Attention is given to insulation resistance, dielectric strength, and mechanical robustness. -
Safety and Protection
The standard specifies protective measures against electric shock, including criteria for insulation and metal parts to prevent hazard during installation and use. -
Testing Procedures
IEC 60998-2-3 outlines test sequences and sampling methods to verify compliance, such as temperature rise tests, mechanical strength, insulation resistance, and resistance to environmental factors including heat and humidity. -
Marking and Classification
Requirements include clear marking of rated connecting capacity and conductor compatibility, enabling proper identification and correct application. -
Conductor Compatibility
The standard gives tables correlating rated connecting capacity with conductor sizes, including the relationship between cross-sectional mm² and North American Wire Gauge (AWG) sizes, ensuring global applicability. -
Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC)
Provisions ensure that connecting devices meet electromagnetic emission and immunity requirements for safe household and industrial operation.
Applications
IEC 60998-2-3 applies primarily to:
- Electrical connectors in household low-voltage circuits where insulation-piercing units facilitate quick and reliable conductor connections without prior stripping of insulation.
- Installation in domestic environments and similar low-voltage applications requiring safety, reliability, and ease of use.
- Devices used by electricians and professionals needing standardized, tested components for wiring installations in residences, commercial buildings, and small industrial settings.
- Systems requiring compliance with international electrical safety and performance standards to assure quality and reduce risk of electric shock or fire.
By adhering to IEC 60998-2-3, manufacturers ensure that their insulation-piercing connecting devices deliver consistent performance, fit into the global market, and provide end-users with reliable and safe electrification solutions.
