IEC 61000-4-16:2015 relates to the immunity requirements and test methods for electrical and electronic equipment to conducted, common mode disturbances in the range d.c. to 150 kHz. The object of this standard is to establish a common and reproducible basis for testing electrical and electronic equipment with the application of common mode disturbances to power supply, control, signal and communication ports. It has the status of a basic EMC publication in accordance with IEC Guide 107. This second edition cancels and replaces the first edition published in 1998, Amendment 1:2001 and Amendment 2:2009. This edition constitutes a technical revision.
Abstract
Overview - IEC 61000-4-16 (2015) for EMC immunity testing
IEC 61000-4-16:2015 is an international standard in the IEC 61000 series that defines test methods and immunity requirements for electrical and electronic equipment exposed to conducted, common‑mode disturbances in the frequency range d.c. (0 Hz) to 150 kHz. As a basic EMC publication (IEC Guide 107), this second edition (2015) establishes a common, reproducible basis for applying common‑mode disturbances to power supply, control, signal and communication ports.
Key points:
- Covers immunity tests for conducted common‑mode disturbances from 0 Hz to 150 kHz
- Defines waveforms, test levels, test equipment, set‑up and test procedures
- Applies to ports and interfaces with cables (not intended for very short cables < 20 m)
- Replaces the 1998 edition and subsequent amendments; technical revision completed in 2015
Key technical topics and requirements
- Test voltage and current waveform: Specifies the required disturbance profile and test signals to be applied to equipment ports.
- Test levels: Defines ranges of continuous and short‑duration disturbance levels and specific provisions for mains frequencies (including 16 Hz, 50 Hz and 60 Hz) and the 15 Hz–150 kHz band.
- Test equipment: Requirements and performance criteria for test generators (d.c., mains frequency and 15 Hz–150 kHz), plus verification methods.
- Coupling/decoupling networks: Use of coupling devices to inject common‑mode disturbances and decoupling/isolation devices to protect the test environment.
- Test set‑up and procedures: Laboratory reference conditions (climatic and electromagnetic), earthing/grounding arrangements, execution of tests, and evaluation/reporting of results.
- Scope exclusions: Disturbances from 400 Hz mains systems, differential‑mode harmonics on a.c. power ports (covered by IEC 61000‑4‑13/4‑19), and intentional RF transmitters (covered by IEC 61000‑4‑6).
Practical applications - who uses IEC 61000-4-16
This standard is used by manufacturers, test laboratories, product compliance engineers and standards committees who need to:
- Verify immunity of industrial, commercial and telecom equipment to common‑mode currents and leakage/return currents on power and signal lines
- Design grounding, cable routing and filtering to reduce susceptibility to conducted disturbances
- Prepare product test plans and compliance reports for EMC certification
- Support product committees that adopt this test in product family standards
Typical sectors: industrial automation, power distribution, building services, telecommunications equipment, and medical/IT systems where long cable runs and grounding loops can cause common‑mode disturbances.
