IEC 61000-4-19:2014 relates to the immunity requirements and test methods for electrical and electronic equipment to conducted, differential mode disturbances and signalling in the range 2 kHz up to 150 kHz at a.c. power ports. The object of this standard is to establish a common and reproducible basis for testing electrical and electronic equipment with the application of differential mode disturbances and signalling to a.c. power ports. This standard defines: - test waveforms; - range of test levels; - test equipment; - test setup; - test procedures; - and verification procedures. These tests are intended to demonstrate the immunity of electrical and electronic equipment operating at a mains supply voltage up to 280 V (from phase to neutral or phase to earth, if no neutral is used) and a frequency of 50 Hz or 60 Hz when subjected to conducted, differential mode disturbances such as those originating from power electronics and power line communication systems. The immunity to harmonics and interharmonics, including mains signalling, on a.c. power ports up to 2 kHz in differential mode is covered by IEC 61000-4-13. Emissions in the frequency range 2 kHz to 150 kHz often have both differential mode and common mode components. This standard provides immunity tests only for differential mode disturbances and signalling. It is recommended to perform common mode tests as well, which are covered by IEC 61000-4-16. Key words: electromagnetic compatibility, EMC
Abstract
Overview
IEC 61000-4-19:2014 is an international standard issued by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) focusing on electromagnetic compatibility (EMC). This standard specifically addresses testing and measurement techniques for equipment immunity to conducted, differential mode disturbances and signalling in the frequency range of 2 kHz to 150 kHz at a.c. power ports. It sets out requirements and methods to evaluate electrical and electronic devices' resilience against disturbances that commonly originate from power electronics and power line communication systems in industrial, commercial, and residential environments.
The objective of IEC 61000-4-19 is to provide a consistent and reproducible framework for:
- Defining test waveforms and disturbance profiles
- Establishing test levels and procedures
- Describing test equipment and setups
- Outlining verification and evaluation protocols
This standard applies to equipment operating at mains supply voltages up to 280 V and at frequencies of 50 Hz or 60 Hz, ensuring reliable operation despite differential mode disturbances on the AC power input.
Key Topics
IEC 61000-4-19:2014 covers multiple essential aspects related to immunity testing for differential mode disturbances:
- Test Waveforms and Levels: Defines continuous wave (CW) pulses with pauses and rectangularly modulated pulses to simulate real-world disturbances at differential mode voltage and current.
- Test Equipment: Specifies performance and characteristics for disturbance generators used in immunity testing, including differential voltage and current test generators.
- Test Setup: Provides detailed configurations for coupling/decoupling networks and connection schemes to replicate interference on AC power ports.
- Test Procedures: Describes execution steps under controlled laboratory conditions with electromagnetic and climatic considerations to ensure accuracy.
- Verification Procedures: Includes equipment verification to maintain the quality and repeatability of tests.
- Evaluation and Reporting: Outlines how results should be evaluated and documented.
The standard distinguishes itself by focusing strictly on differential mode disturbances in the 2 kHz to 150 kHz frequency band. It recommends pairing these tests with common mode immunity tests (such as those covered by IEC 61000-4-16) for comprehensive EMC assessment.
Applications
IEC 61000-4-19 is crucial for manufacturers, testing laboratories, and quality assurance teams involved in:
- Electrical and electronic equipment design: Improving immunity to conducted disturbances originating from power conversion and communication devices, which may cause malfunctions, data errors, or equipment damage.
- Power electronics and energy systems: Ensuring robust operation of devices connected to mains power with pervasive interference from drives, converters, and smart grid components.
- Power line communication systems: Validating immunity of devices to signalling signals superimposed on AC lines to enable reliable communication without electromagnetic disruptions.
- Electric meters and smart devices: Implementing immunity tests to verify compliance and durability in real-world power networks exhibiting complex disturbance spectra.
- Regulatory compliance and certification: Meeting regulatory requirements for EMC immunity to differential mode disturbances in the specified frequency range, facilitating market access.
By implementing tests according to IEC 61000-4-19, organizations can ensure better product reliability, minimize operational disruptions, and improve system safety in electrically noisy environments.
Related Standards
To achieve comprehensive EMC assessment and compliance, IEC 61000-4-19 is often used alongside related standards, including:
- IEC 61000-4-13: Covers immunity testing for harmonics and interharmonics including mains signalling below 2 kHz, complementing the higher frequency range of IEC 61000-4-19.
- IEC 61000-4-16: Focuses on immunity to common mode disturbances within the same 2 kHz to 150 kHz frequency band, recommended in conjunction with differential mode tests.
- IEC 61000-4-6: Addresses conducted immunity in the radio-frequency (RF) spectrum above 150 kHz, expanding EMC testing to electromagnetic disturbances at higher frequencies.
- IEC 61000-4 series: Other parts deal with different disturbance phenomena, testing techniques, and immunity requirements for electric and electronic equipment.
These standards collectively guide manufacturers and EMC professionals in robustly assessing equipment performance against the full spectrum of conducted and radiated electromagnetic disturbances.
By following the detailed methodologies set out by IEC 61000-4-19:2014, organizations ensure effective management of electromagnetic interference in the critical 2 kHz to 150 kHz range at AC power ports-enhancing product quality, safety, and market competitiveness in today’s complex electrical environments.
