IEC 61000-4-41:2024 relates to broadband radiated disturbances generated by, for example, communication devices or services, transmitters or industrial electromagnetic sources or any other devices capable of generating such a signal. The object of this document is to establish a common reference for evaluating the immunity of electrical and electronic equipment when subjected to broadband radiated electromagnetic fields. This document specifies testing in the frequency ranges above 80 MHz, limited only by the capabilities of commercially available test instrumentation. It forms Part 4-41 of IEC 61000. It has the status of a basic EMC publication in accordance with IEC Guide 107.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 61000-4-41:2024 is an international standard published by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC). It addresses electromagnetic compatibility (EMC), focusing specifically on broadband radiated immunity tests for electrical and electronic equipment. This standard establishes a uniform approach for evaluating how well equipment withstands exposure to broadband radiated electromagnetic fields, such as those generated by communication devices, transmitters, or industrial sources.
The standard applies to frequency ranges above 80 MHz, with the upper limit dependent on the capabilities of commercially available test equipment. As a basic publication in the IEC 61000 EMC series, IEC 61000-4-41:2024 supports consistent immunity assessment across diverse electrical and electronic sectors.
Key Topics
- Broadband Radiated Disturbances: Covers the impact of electromagnetic fields emitted from communication devices, industrial equipment, and other broadband electromagnetic sources.
- Immunity Evaluation: Describes methods for assessing the resistance of equipment under test (EUT) to broadband RF disturbances in laboratory settings.
- Testing Frequency Ranges: Focuses on frequency bands above 80 MHz, commonly affected by modern digital communication systems such as LTE and 5G.
- Test Signal Specifications:
- Use of band-limited white noise as a representative test signal for broadband environments.
- Requirements for crest factor and spectral density to ensure realistic electromagnetic exposure.
- Pulse modulation with a 50% duty cycle is recommended to simulate real-world signal variation.
- Test Procedure and Setup:
- Guidance on signal generation, level adjustment, and use of uniform field area (UFA) during testing.
- Verification of test signal characteristics through spectrum masks and field measurement techniques.
- Documentation: Emphasizes thorough test reporting and measurement uncertainty considerations.
Applications
IEC 61000-4-41:2024 is crucial in industries where electrical and electronic systems might be exposed to broadband radiated electromagnetic disturbances. Practical applications include:
- Telecommunications Equipment: Ensuring routers, base stations, and mobile devices like 4G/5G equipment maintain functionality when exposed to broadband emissions.
- Industrial Control Systems: Evaluating PLCs, drives, and sensors against RF disturbances generated by nearby communication transmitters or machinery.
- Consumer Electronics: Testing products such as smart TVs, home automation systems, and wireless communication devices against disruptions from broadband emitters.
- Automotive Electronics: Assessing infotainment and vehicle-to-everything (V2X) modules for immunity to high-frequency interference from other onboard or external wireless devices.
- Compliance & Certification: Supporting manufacturers and regulatory bodies with standardized EMC immunity testing procedures for product approvals.
By specifying a consistent method for evaluating immunity, this standard reduces the risk of malfunction, data errors, or performance loss in environments crowded with broadband sources.
Related Standards
IEC 61000-4-41:2024 is part of the comprehensive IEC 61000 series on electromagnetic compatibility. Related standards include:
- IEC 61000-4-3: Testing and measurement techniques - Radiated, radio-frequency, electromagnetic field immunity test; covers narrowband radiated immunity below 6 GHz.
