IEC 61084-2-2:2017 specifies requirements and tests for cable trunking systems (CTS) and cable ducting systems (CDS) intended for the accommodation, and where necessary for the electrically protective separation, of insulated conductors, cables and possibly other electrical equipment in electrical and/or communication systems installations. The maximum voltage of these installations is 1 000 V AC and 1 500 V DC. These systems are intended for mounting underfloor, flushfloor or onfloor. This document does not apply to CTS/CDS which are intended to be fixed to the wall and supported by the floor. This document does not apply to conduit systems, cable tray systems, cable ladder systems, power track systems or equipment covered by other standards. This second edition cancels and replaces the first edition published in 2003. This edition constitutes a technical revision. This edition includes the following significant technical changes with respect to the previous edition: - classification; - construction; - mechanical and electrical properties. This International standard is to be used in conjunction with IEC 61084-1:2017.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 61084-2-2:2017 is an international standard published by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC). It defines the particular requirements for cable trunking systems (CTS) and cable ducting systems (CDS) intended for electrical installations mounted underfloor, flushfloor, or onfloor. These systems accommodate and protect insulated electrical conductors, cables, and other electrical devices commonly used in electrical and communication installations with voltages up to 1,000 V AC and 1,500 V DC.
This second edition enhances the previous 2003 version by updating system classification, construction requirements, and mechanical and electrical properties to reflect advances and industry best practices. IEC 61084-2-2:2017 is designed to be used alongside IEC 61084-1:2017, which covers general requirements for cable management systems.
This standard specifically excludes cable trunking or ducting systems mounted on walls or supported by floors, as well as other cable management types such as conduit, cable trays, cable ladders, or power tracks.
Key Topics
-
Scope and Purpose
Specifies performance requirements and tests for CTS and CDS used for underfloor, flushfloor, or onfloor mounting, ensuring safe accommodation and electrically protective separation of cables. -
Classification
Systems are categorized based on their mounting type, mechanical strength, and electrical properties to meet different installation environments and load conditions. -
Construction Requirements
Construction guidelines ensure systems provide adequate protection against mechanical forces encountered in floor installations, allow easy cable access, and facilitate installation and maintenance. -
Mechanical Properties
Includes detailed mechanical load tests (e.g., hammer tests, load-bearing capacities) to verify robustness and durability for floor-mounted applications. -
Electrical Properties
Requirements ensure electrical safety, insulation characteristics, and proper conduction to avoid interference or hazards. -
Thermal and Fire Hazard Considerations
Specifies criteria related to heat resistance, fire performance, and external environmental influences to meet safety regulations. -
Marking and Documentation
Mandates clear labeling and proper documentation to facilitate identification, installation, and compliance verification. -
Testing and Compliance
Details test conditions, including environmental testing and electromagnetic compatibility, to ensure long-term reliability.
Applications
-
Underfloor Cable Installation
Ideal for embedding cable systems beneath floors, protecting cables from mechanical stress and environmental factors while maintaining easy access for upgrades or repairs. -
Flushfloor Cable Management
Suitable for installations where cable trunking or ducting is integrated into floor surfaces, optimizing space and reducing tripping hazards. -
Onfloor Cable Systems
Used when cable ducts or trunkings are mounted directly above floor surfaces, offering flexible and accessible cable routing solutions in industrial or commercial settings. -
Electrical and Communication Systems
Supports installations in diverse environments such as offices, commercial buildings, data centers, and industrial plants with a focus on safety, durability, and regulatory compliance.
