IEC 61094-2:2009 is applicable to laboratory standard microphones meeting the requirements of IEC 61094-1 and other types of condenser microphone having the same mechanical dimensions and specifies a primary method of determining the complex pressure sensitivity so as to establish a reproducible and accurate basis for the measurement of sound pressure. This second edition cancels and replaces the first edition published in 1992. This second edition constitutes a technical revision. This edition includes the following significant technical changes with respect to the previous edition: - an update of Clause 6 to fulfil the requirements of ISO/IEC Guide 98-3; - an improvement of the heat conduction theory in Annex A; - a revision of Annex F: Physical properties of humid air.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 61094-2:2009, titled Electroacoustics - Measurement Microphones - Part 2: Primary Method for Pressure Calibration of Laboratory Standard Microphones by the Reciprocity Technique, is an international standard published by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC). This standard specifies a primary method for accurately determining the complex pressure sensitivity of laboratory standard microphones, particularly those complying with IEC 61094-1 and similar condenser microphones with identical mechanical dimensions.
This document provides a reproducible and precise basis for calibrating sound pressure, vital for ensuring the reliability and accuracy of measurement microphones used in acoustic testing and research. The second edition, a major technical revision of the 1992 original, incorporates significant updates, including compliance with ISO/IEC Guide 98-3, enhancements to heat conduction theory, and revised data on the physical properties of humid air.
Key Topics
- Primary Calibration Method: Details the reciprocity technique, a fundamental approach using two or three microphones and an auxiliary sound source to establish pressure sensitivity without reliance on secondary calibration devices.
- Pressure Sensitivity Determination: Provides formulas, theoretical background, and practical steps to measure sensitivity accurately, including corrections for heat conduction and capillary tube acoustic impedance.
- Environmental Conditions: Discusses how environmental factors such as static pressure, temperature, humidity, and leakage affect microphone calibration and how to account for these influences.
- Uncertainty Analysis: Breaks down components of calibration uncertainty, covering electrical and acoustic transfer impedances, coupler properties, and microphone parameters to enable thorough evaluation of measurement precision.
- Technical Annexes:
- Heat conduction and viscous loss modeling in cavities
- Acoustic impedance of capillary tubes
- Examples of cylindrical couplers used for calibration
- Influence of environmental conditions on sensitivity
- Methods for determining microphone parameters
- Physical properties of humid air relevant to calibration
Applications
IEC 61094-2:2009 is essential for:
- Calibration Laboratories: Establishing primary standards for pressure sensitivity calibrations of laboratory-grade microphones, ensuring international traceability.
- Acoustic Measurement Accuracy: Accurate sound pressure calibrations are critical in diverse fields such as noise control engineering, audio equipment testing, environmental noise monitoring, and research in acoustics.
- Manufacturers of Measurement Microphones: Enhancing quality assurance and product consistency by adhering to internationally recognized calibration methods.
- Metrology Institutes: Implementing primary methods to maintain national standards of microphone calibration and sound measurement reliability.
- Research and Development: Providing a thorough theoretical and practical framework for designing novel microphones or acoustic measurement systems with precise calibration requirements.
Related Standards
- IEC 61094-1: Defines requirements for laboratory standard microphones, including mechanical dimensions and construction, forming the basis for the applicability of IEC 61094-2 calibration methods.
