IEC 61196-4-1:2022 applies to radiating coaxial communication cables. These cables are intended for use in wireless communication system in long, narrow, semi-closed and indoor environment, such as tunnels, railways, highways, subways, elevators and other installations. This second edition cancels and replaces the first edition published in 2016. This edition constitutes a technical revision. This edition includes the following significant technical changes with respect to the previous edition: a. rewrote "1 Scope" to be consistent with other blank detail specifications of coaxial cables; b. added detail construction requirements of inner and outer conductor in "[7] Cable construction"; c. added "Storage temperature range", "Installation temperature range" and "Stop frequency band" in "[8] Engineering information (reference only)"; d. added "8.2.11 Link loss", "8.4.9 Adhesion of dielectric", "8.4.10 Shrinkage for insulations", "8.4.11 Maximum pulling force of cable"; e. added different detail requirements or typical values in 8.2.4, 8.2.6 to 8.2.8, 8.3.1 to 8.3.4, 8.4.1, 8.4.3 to 8.4.8; f. deleted "7.4.4 Ovality of outer conductor".
Abstract
Overview
IEC 61196-4-1:2022 is the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) blank detail specification for radiating coaxial communication cables (radiating cables). It standardizes how manufacturers, test laboratories and procurers prepare detailed product specifications for cables used to distribute wireless signals in long, narrow, semi‑closed indoor environments - for example tunnels, railways, subways, highways, elevators and similar installations where conventional radio propagation is limited.
This second edition (2022) replaces the 2016 edition and introduces technical revisions to cable construction, engineering information and test requirements to reflect current radiating cable design and deployment practices.
Key topics and technical requirements
The standard focuses on the elements needed to create a complete detail specification for radiating coaxial cable:
- Cable construction: defined arrangements and material requirements for inner conductor, dielectric, outer conductor and optional sheath. The 2022 edition adds more detailed construction requirements for inner and outer conductors.
- Electrical characteristics: includes characteristic impedance (examples shown: (50 ± 2) Ω or (75 ± 2) Ω at 200 MHz), return loss, capacitance, attenuation/insertion loss, coupling loss and insulation resistance (e.g., ≥ 10 MΩ·km where specified). Withstand voltage and spark-test limits are specified by cable size/type.
- Engineering information (reference only): operating, storage and installation temperature ranges, operating/cut‑off/stop frequency bands, nominal weight, bending radii and power ratings - newly expanded in this edition to include storage and installation temperature ranges and stop frequency band.
- Mechanical and environmental tests: visual and dimensional checks, ageing, cold-bend performance, climatic sequence, environmental stress cracking and mechanical strength (crush, tensile/pulling). New test items added include link loss, adhesion of dielectric, shrinkage for insulations and maximum pulling force of cable.
- Detail-specification format: the document is a blank template that defines layout, required fields and how to indicate NA/NS when characteristics are not applicable or not specified.
Applications and who uses it
IEC 61196-4-1 is used by:
- Radiating cable manufacturers writing product detail specifications and data sheets
- System integrators and RF engineers designing distributed antenna systems (DAS) in tunnels, subways, railways and constrained indoor environments
- Test laboratories and certification bodies performing electrical, mechanical and environmental tests
- Procurement teams and standards committees specifying acceptance criteria for projects and safety/regulatory compliance
Using the blank detail specification helps ensure consistent, testable, and interoperable radiating coaxial cable specifications for wireless communication deployments.
