IEC 61207-2:2019 applies to all aspects of analyzers using high-temperature electro¬chemical sensors for the measurement of oxygen in gas. It applies to in-situ and extractive analyzers and to analyzers installed indoors and outdoors. The object of this part is: – to specify the terminology and definitions related to the functional performance of gas analyzers, utilizing a high-temperature electrochemical sensor, for the continuous measurement of oxygen concentration in a sample of gas; – to unify methods used in making and verifying statements on the functional performance of such analyzers; – to specify what tests are performed to determine the functional performance and how such tests are carried out; – to provide basic documents to support the application of internationally recognized quality management standards. This second edition cancels and replaces the first edition published in 1994. This edition constitutes a technical revision. This edition includes the following significant technical changes with respect to the previous edition. a) all the terms and definitions relating to the document have been updated where appropriate; b) the description of the principle of the galvanic cell has been expanded and clarified; c) new definitions and illustrations have been added for different measurement methods for oxygen using solid electrolytes for galvanic cells; d) new illustrations have been added for existing descriptions for ion pump cells; e) a more detailed description of the effect of the presence of oxidizable gases has been added; f) all references to “errors” have been replaced by “uncertainties” and appropriate updated definitions applied.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 61207-2:2019 is an international standard developed by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) that defines the expression of performance for gas analyzers measuring oxygen concentration in gases. This standard specifically applies to analyzers utilizing high-temperature electrochemical sensors, which typically operate at temperatures exceeding 500 °C. Both in-situ analyzers-where sensors are mounted directly within process ducts-and extractive analyzers-where gas samples are drawn from the process and measured externally-are covered under this standard. IEC 61207-2:2019 replaces the original 1994 edition and provides updated terminology, definitions, testing procedures, and performance verification methods tailored for oxygen measurement in various industrial gas applications.
Key Topics
-
Scope and Application
The standard addresses all functional performance aspects of oxygen analyzers that use high-temperature electrochemical sensors, whether installed indoors or outdoors. -
Terminology and Definitions
It unifies terminology related to sensor types (such as galvanic cells and ion pump cells), measurement principles, and analyzer configurations to ensure consistency in performance communication. -
Performance Testing and Verification
IEC 61207-2:2019 specifies the standardized tests required to determine analyzer performance characteristics such as measurement accuracy, output fluctuation, response times (delay, rise, and fall times), and influence from oxidizable gases. -
Measurement Methods
The standard details variations in oxygen measurement techniques using solid electrolytes, including new illustrations for galvanic and ion pump cell-based sensors. -
Uncertainty Evaluation
All references to “errors” have been replaced with “uncertainties”, reflecting modern measurement science approaches for expressing analyzer precision and reliability. -
Quality Management Support
The document supports the consistent application of internationally recognized quality management standards, enhancing reliability and traceability in oxygen gas analysis.
Applications
IEC 61207-2:2019 is critical for industries and processes where accurate oxygen gas measurement is essential. Typical applications include:
-
Combustion Process Monitoring
Accurate in-situ oxygen measurement enables optimization of combustion efficiency, reduction of emissions, and control of fuel consumption in power plants, furnaces, and boilers. -
Environmental Monitoring
Measurement of oxygen levels in emissions and exhaust gases to comply with environmental regulations. -
Industrial Gas Production and Purity Analysis
Ensuring oxygen concentration specifications are met in gas manufacturing or purification processes. -
Process Safety and Hazardous Area Monitoring
Use in hazardous environments with appropriate safety units and flame traps as specified, for maintaining operational safety. -
