This part of IEC 61223 applies to the effectiveness of mammographic X-ray equipment, with respect to image quality and dose, in combination with aspects of equipment safety. This standard applies to mammographic X-ray equipment and mammographic stereotactic devices. The tests described in this standard require the quality and performance of the X-ray image receptors to be assured prior to the acceptance testing when they are not an integral part of the mammographic X-ray equipment. This includes radiographic films, intensifying screens, radiographic cassettes, storage phosphor plates and associated equipment such as film processors or storage phosphor plate readers, image display devices and hard copy cameras. For testing radiographic cassettes and intensifying screens, this standard makes reference to ISO 4090. Sensitivity and contrast for the screen-film image receptors are considered to be stated according to ISO 9236-3. By the measurements described in this standard, data for average glandular dose calculation can be determined. When the results of the acceptance test are in compliance with the expected values, the baseline values for the subsequent constancy tests are established. This part of IEC 61223 defines a) the essential parameters which describe the performance of the above-mentioned mammographic X ray equipment with regard to image quality and dose; and b) the methods of testing whether measured quantities related to those parameters comply with specified tolerances. These methods mainly rely on non-invasive measurements that use appropriate test equipment and are performed during or after the installation. Signed statements covering steps in the installation procedure can be used as part of the acceptance test. Tests required by a higher level of compliance take precedence over similar tests with a lower level of compliance.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 61223-3-2:2007 is an international standard developed by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) specifically for the acceptance testing of mammographic X-ray equipment. The standard focuses on evaluating the imaging performance and radiation dose associated with mammographic X-ray systems and mammographic stereotactic devices. The goal is to ensure that newly installed or significantly modified equipment meets manufacturer specifications and safety requirements, ultimately providing reliable diagnostic image quality at an optimized radiation dose.
This standard applies broadly to various imaging receptor systems used in mammography, including radiographic films, intensifying screens, cassettes, storage phosphor plates, digital image receptors, and associated equipment such as film processors, phosphor plate readers, image display devices, and hard copy cameras.
Key Topics
- Acceptance Testing Procedures: Describes the methods and essential parameters for verifying the performance of mammographic X-ray systems during the acceptance test phase, after installation or major modifications.
- Image Quality Assurance: Emphasizes tests related to image quality factors such as spatial resolution, uniformity, low contrast detectability, and dynamic range.
- Radiation Dose Evaluation: Provides procedures for measuring and documenting dose-related parameters, including entrance surface air kerma and calculation data for average glandular dose.
- Non-Invasive Measurements: Encourages non-invasive testing methods using certified equipment to ensure safe and accurate measurement of equipment performance.
- Components Testing: Outlines the need to test the performance of integral and associated image receptor components, such as film-screen combinations, digital receptors, and display devices, prior to equipment acceptance testing.
- Documentation and Compliance: Details required documentation, including compliance with relevant IEC standards, acceptance criteria, performance records, and statements of conformity.
- Levels of Compliance: Specifies that local regulatory and contractual requirements supersede the standard’s recommendations if conflicts arise.
Applications
IEC 61223-3-2:2007 is valuable for a wide range of stakeholders in medical imaging departments, including:
- Medical Physicists: Responsible for performing and recording acceptance tests to verify compliance with performance specifications and regulatory guidelines.
- Quality Assurance Teams: Uses the standard’s procedures to establish baseline performance data for ongoing constancy testing and preventive maintenance programs.
- Manufacturers and Integrators: Ensures that supplied equipment meets quality and safety obligations before clinical use.
- Healthcare Facilities: Assists in procuring and safely implementing new mammographic systems, supporting optimal patient care and dose management.
- Regulatory Bodies: Provides a benchmark for setting local requirements and auditing compliance with international standards in mammography.
This standard is essential for optimizing the diagnostic value of mammographic imaging, safeguarding patient safety, and enabling systematic quality control in clinical practice.
