IEC 61280-2-1:2010 describes the test procedures applicable to digital fibre optic communication and data systems. The object of this test procedure is to measure the minimum and maximum optical powers required and allowed at the optical input port of a fibre optic system to ensure its operation within specified limits. Another objective is to verify that the guaranteed error performance is obtained at the minimum and the maximum optical input powers specified by the terminal equipment manufacturer. This second edition cancels and replaces the first edition, published in 1998, and constitutes a technical revision. The main changes with respect to the previous edition are: - revised to include the requirements associated with data communication equipment, regenerators and amplifiers; - the term "jumper lead" has been replaced by "test cord"; - a section for definitions has been added; - a section on measurement uncertainties has been added. This bilingual version (2015-12) corresponds to the monolingual English version, published in 2010-03. Keywords: digital fibre optic communication and data systems, optical input port
Abstract
Overview
IEC 61280-2-1:2010 specifies standardized test procedures for digital fibre optic communication and data systems to determine receiver performance at the optical input port. The standard defines how to measure receiver sensitivity (minimum optical power for a specified error performance) and overload level (maximum input power above which performance degrades). Edition 2 (2010) is a technical revision that extends coverage to data communication equipment, regenerators and amplifiers, replaces “jumper lead” with test cord, and adds sections for definitions and measurement uncertainties.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope: Tests apply to receivers, amplifiers and regenerators in digital fibre optic systems; results verify guaranteed error performance at minimum and maximum input powers.
- Error performance metrics: Bit Error Ratio (BER) and Errored Block Ratio (EBR) are used to quantify performance. Test equipment must be capable of measuring low BERs (down to 10^-12 where required).
- BER test set: Includes a data generator (capable of PRBS, all‑1 and special patterns) and an error counter able to interface with the equipment under test (EUT).
- Signal formats: Tests must use the signal format representative of actual operating conditions (pulse shape, amplitude, bit rate).
- Optical measurement apparatus:
- Optical power meter with resolution ≥ 0.1 dB and calibrated for wavelength/power range.
- Variable optical attenuator with step ≤ 0.25 dB and sufficient dynamic range.
- Optical splitter (typically 50% ± 0.1 dB).
- Reference test cords (single‑mode or multimode) with connector loss ≤ 1.0 dB.
- Procedures: Defined setups for sensitivity and overload measurements, connector cleaning, input power calibration, BER/EBR determination, and calculation/reporting of results.
- Uncertainties: New section addressing measurement uncertainties and required reporting.
Applications
- Product qualification and specification of receiver sensitivity and overload limits for transceivers, amplifiers, regenerators and network elements.
- Manufacturing test and quality assurance to confirm compliance with declared optical input ranges.
- Acceptance testing, interoperability verification and troubleshooting of fibre optic links in telecom and data networks (e.g., Ethernet, long‑haul, metro).
- Laboratory test methods for R&D, component suppliers and independent test houses.
Who should use this standard
- Test engineers and laboratory technicians performing optical receiver characterization.
- Manufacturers of fibre optic transceivers, amplifiers and regenerators.
- Network operators and system integrators specifying component input power limits.
- Compliance and certification bodies verifying supplier claims.
